Brilliant writing entertaining and at the same time learning history

Here’s the thing: this was a unique story and I thoroughly enjoyed the setting, the characters, and the plot. The mystery intrigued me enough to keep me in it, despite the author’s tendency to write tedious and technical descriptions and passages that tell rather than show. I knocked off one star for that, and one for the narrator, whose saccharine, commercial intonation flattened the characters and cheesed their emotional range. Bottom line: read, don’t listen. That way you can enjoy the story while skimming the over-described sections and saving yourself the trouble of wishing the narrator would just talk like a human being instead of a salesperson.

Unexpectedly good story. The intelligence and grit of women in a man’s occupation and breaking down a code. Finally finished it as I have the book but couldn’t finish it.

Captivating mystery story, excellent narration. Interesting twist at the end.
