We used to say "going across the line." When I started school at age 6, it was in a small border village called Lochiel about 25 or 30 miles East of Nogales. I went to a little one room, one teacher, 8 grades school. About halfway through 2nd grade we moved back to Nogales.
I moved from Nogales to the little community at McGee Ranch (where I reside currently). When I started 4th grade. This also was a single room, one teacher, eight grade school. We had a lot of trouble keeping a school teachers until I reached the 6th grade.
Finally, the county school superintendent in Tucson sent a teacher, who herself was a rancher and she was my teacher through grade 8.
It was through this great woman's teaching that I learned to enjoy poetry. She taught us so many things that I have been thankful for all my life. I learned and recited many American, and some English poems (Sir Walter Scott, Alfred Lord Tennyson, Longfellow, James Whitcomb Riley, etc)
I didn't start writing poetry until the 1980's except for some personal greeting cards, like family weddings, birthdays, anniversary's and some odes I read at peoples funeral services.view less
