He wrote the great majority of his poems between 1903 and 1913. He wrote about the people and places he knew. Many of the poems are comic and in the local dialect. They can also be seen as a picture of a bygone time. "Billy Bell, Redesdale Roadman, Border Bard" contains a selection of his poems along with other chapters on his life and times.
