Sonya Whitehead is a single mother of two: an eleven-year-old daughter and a nine-month-old son. Born and raised in Philadelphia, she worked a full-time job and obtained a college degree in addition to working part time on the side. Throughout her years of parenting she was a very hands-on mother. She enjoyed helping her daughter through her problems. One of her strategies for addressing problems was writing. One day, after dealing with some bullies on the block who teased her daughter about wearing hair extensions, she suggested they write about it. Her daughter then came back with this story about friendship and bullying: The Colorful Elephant. It was there the story was inspired. She took the story and made some adjustments, added more characters, and formed it into this book. This book conveys a strong message pertaining to bullying and friendship that children endure daily in life. Most children will benefit from reading this story. Mainly because it was collaborated by both a mother and child.view less
