The family was strongly medical – Dr Morgan Williams was a GP in Morriston and Beryl’s brother Howell was a surgeon at Swansea General Hospital. Bernard was educated at Marlborough College, Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge and St Thomas’ Hospital, London, qualifying in Medicine in 1932.
Trained as a surgeon and, anticipating the outbreak of war, Bernard joined the Royal Army Medical Corps in 1939. He met Rosalind in Cairo, and they were married in 1943.
