Her family moved from Edinburgh, Scotland to Montreal, Canada, and then settled permanently in Mobile, Alabama. During the war years, she defied those who opposed hospital work, deeming it “unladylike,” and went on to become one of the best known nurses in the Western Confederacy, earning her the nickname “The Confederate Rose.” During her later years she was active in the United Daughters of the Confederacy and the United Confederate Veterans until her death in 1909.view less
