When I was a kid I used to draw things and sketch cartoons. I would write little stories that were almost entirely stolen from things that I had watched on TV or read in a book but I would enjoy inserting different twists in the plot and putting my own spin on them to try and make the story ‘mine’. Fast forward many years later and I began to pursue something that I had only dabbled in when I was younger – music. I picked up an acoustic guitar when I was sixteen and shortly after that I picked up a cheap electric guitar and an even cheaper amplifier. Though I was no rock star, I enjoyed playing along to some of my favourite tunes and I soon discovered an even better way to be creative – improvising and composing your own music. That was when I rediscovered a serious passion for being creative that had been somewhat dulled by academic study throughout my teens.
As I played more music and enjoyed the liberating feeling of being creative again, I decided to buy a Kindle. I had little space in my cramped bedroom and while acquiring more books would have been great, I simply had no room to store them. With the Kindle I could get lots and lots of books and they took up no more space than the slim, streamlined Kindle itself. Awesome! So I eagerly bought some sci-fi books and started reading. As I read, I realised that I missed writing my little stories and inventing characters so I decided to start writing again in my spare time. I wrote down lots of different ideas and a couple of short stories before embarking on my first attempt to write a full-size book. While it was no mean feat (I had no idea just how hard authors actually work to write and re-write a full book!) I found the whole process enormously enjoyable and rewarding.
Having learned a great deal from writing my first book, I began the process of planning my second book at the same time as creating this blog and building an online presence. Where do I go from here? I’m not certain but I do know that I will always have a passion for being creative and as such I will keep writing for as long as I have stories in me. Hope to see you on the journey!
