Michael Flynn graduated from the US Naval Academy in 1995 with an English major and French minor, completing an MA degree in English literature from the University of Maryland later that same year....view moreMichael Flynn graduated from the US Naval Academy in 1995 with an English major and French minor, completing an MA degree in English literature from the University of Maryland later that same year. He was designated a Naval Flight Officer in 1998 and assigned to Fleet Air Reconnaissance Squadron Two in Rota, Spain. Next, he planned and coordinated air reconnaissance missions as a staff officer in Naples, Italy. In 2003 he was selected as an Olmsted Scholar and spent the next few years studying Mandarin Chinese and International Relations at Nanjing University and the Hopkins-Nanjing Center in China. He returned to operational duties from 2006-2008, flying reconnaissance missions in the Pacific and Middle East. In 2008 he served as an Electronic Warfare Office for the Army's Civil Affairs Brigade in Iraq, fielding and maintaining their counter-IED electronic warfare program. In 2009 he jointed a NATO staff in southern Italy as the air operations officer. In 2011 he was selected for the Permanent Military Professor program, completed his PhD with a dissertation on literary representations of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in contemporary Colombian fiction in 2015 at the University of Texas at Austin. He teaches in the English department at the United States Naval Academy, specializing in literature of the sea, trauma, and, war, and contemporary Latin American literature, especially from Colombia.
