Several years after the war, Rainbow troops and survivors of Dachau reunited. James befriended and maintained lifelong contact with several of those he’d helped liberate. He never forgot his fellow soldiers, Dachau, the orphans, the little girl who lost her Papa, or the other horrors of war, keeping them in perspective. He claimed he never would have survived without the goodness of God. For his service in World War II, he was awarded a Purple Heart, Bronze Star, a combat infantry badge, and four campaign ribbons. In 2001 the 222nd Regiment was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation for courageous action, taking a relentless artillery onslaught and stopping the last major German offensive on January 24–25, 1945. James believed the inch-long cigarette butt earned at Dachau was the greatest award of his life.view less
