THE BLESSING NEXT TO ...view moreDiane Lefer's most recent novel, CONFESSIONS OF A CARNIVORE, was described in LitReactor as "The World According to Garp crossed with Vonnegut’s Hocus Pocus." THE BLESSING NEXT TO THE WOUND (Lantern Books, 2010), nonfiction co-authored with Colombian exile Hector Aristizabal, tells of his surviving torture, civil war, and cocaine cartels in Colombia along with account of the their social justice work in California and around the world. Her most recent short-story collection, CALIFORNIA TRANSIT, received the Mary McCarthy Prize in Short Fiction and was published by Sarabande Books. Previous short fiction collections are THE CIRCLES I MOVE IN (Zoland Books) and VERY MUCH LIKE DESIRE (Carnegie Mellon University Press). As a playwright, her works for the stage have been produced on both coasts and in-between. NIGHTWIND (her theatrical collaboration with Hector Aristizabal) has toured the US, Canada, several European countries and as far afield as India and Afghanistan. Their ongoing collaboration encompasses new theatre, social action workshops, and nonfiction projects. Diane taught for 23 years in the MFA in Writing Program of Vermont College of Fine Arts and now leads arts-based workshops for torture survivors from around the world rebuilding their lives in Los Angeles.view less
