He began working at Fordham University in 1955, where he taught courses on Christian existentialism, human nature, and epistemology.
He studied German at the Goethe-Institut in the mid-1960s and, after, translated German poetry for the literary periodical The Formalist.
He was particularly interested in the works of Søren Kierkegaard, Plato, and the French Catholic philosopher Gabriel Marcel.view less
