He was just a National Service Conscript. Germany, in 1960, was supposed to be an ‘easy’ posting.

He and his mate, Scouse, with their precious, but interestingly acquired Mercedes, enjoyed the life. Even with all the problems caused by lots of girls, and a padre, they travelled around Germany and the Benelux countries, had lots of laughs, and often caused mayhem for others.

Then he volunteered for something over which he had no control. Only nineteen years old, he ended up in East Germany, in the Harz Mountains with a unit that, unlike him, were ‘used to killing’.

He joined forces with a young East German girl, trying to make her way to the West. But could their growing love for each other survive the journey through the mountains, in the middle of winter, and could they ever hope to get across the increasingly fortified border to freedom in the West?

And, if so, what then?
