About

Summary

A set of 119 color prints from negatives exposed by an untrained amateur was judged for “quality” by a panel of eight observers, intentionally selected for their differing levels of photographic sophistication and emotional involvement in picture content. This experiment documents a strong dependence of judgment of picture quality on the attributes of the observer.
For 42 years the author of this paper was a research scientist in the Eastman Kodak Research Laboratories in Rochester, NY. A previously unpublished technical paper, Zwick agreed to publish this short study as a scientific paper sampler. He is also the author of a Worthy Shorts short story collection, Finishing Touches, (WS-139).
