Description

“If you think you're free, there's no escape possible.”

Early in the year during 1961, Professor Richard Alpert (who would later be renamed Ram Dass) held appointments in four departments at Harvard University. He had published books, he drove an expensive Mercedes, and regularly spent his vacations travelling to the Caribbean. Compared to most societal standards, Richard Alpert was considered far more than successful…and yet, he could never seem to shake the looming feeling that something was missing in his life…

It wasn’t until his experimentation with Psilocybin and LSD that everything changed. During a time in his life where experimentation was pivotal, Alpert began to peel back each layer of his identity, disconnecting himself from being a professor, a social cosmopolite, and lastly, disconnecting from the sense of a physical being. Immense fear transformed into exaltation when he finally realized that his truest, purest form was a luminous being that could trust indefinitely and love infinitely.

From this experience, his ultimate spiritual journey commenced. Alpert travelled to India, where his guru renamed him Baba Ram Dass - “servant of God” - and he was introduced to mindful breathing exercises, hatha yoga, and Eastern philosophy. Whenever he found himself reminiscing or planning, he focused on the moment and reminded himself to Be Here Now.
