Description

The Day the World Came to Town is the true story about what happened when 38 jetliners, all bound for the United States, were forced to land in Canada when U.S. airspace was closed following the 9/11 attacks. The population of the tiny town of Gander on Newfoundland Island jumped up from 10,300 to 17,000, yet the citizens of Gander met the stranded passengers with an overwhelming display of hospitality and friendship.

During those four days, several passengers developed lifelong friendships with the local residents, and as a show of gratitude, many scholarship funds for the children of Gander were set up. There were even several donations made to improving the local schools by providing the children with new computers. This is the untold story about how a small town with a big heart came together to show warmth, kindness, and unbounded compassion on one of the darkest days in history. This story is the basis of the Tony Award-winning musical "Come From Away."
