“The One and Only Ivan” is loosely based on the true story of Ivan the gorilla who was kept captive in a shopping mall to entertain people. Book Ivan works to free a baby elephant named Ruby and himself from these cruel circumstances. The novel won the Newbery Medal, and the movie adaptation features Sam Rockwell, Angelina Jolie, and Danny DeVito as voice actors. The film is premiering on Disney+ (and doesn’t cost an extra $30 like the live-action version of “Mulan”).

Description

Celebrating the invigorating and transformative power of friendships in places we never expected, The One and Only Ivan is a story told from the perspective of a captive gorilla. Ivan is placed behind glass walls in his enclosure at a local shopping mall, and over the course of 27 years, he has of course grown used to humans watching him.

He almost never thinks of his life in the jungle any longer, and has become accustomed to his shopping mall life filled with television, his friends Stella and Bob, and his painting. It isn’t until he meets Ruby, a baby elephant that was taken from the wild, that he is forced to see his entire existence through a new lens.

Ivan will have to change to adjust to the newness that Ruby brings, and how he changes and grows is where the story lies.

Katherine Applegate perfectly blends comedy with poignant vignettes to create an evolving story of Ivan’s unforgettable first-person perspective in a story of new friends, art, and a glimmer of hope.
