AT THE CROSSROADS OF DEATH AND DESIRE, A WOMAN TASTES A PLEASURE NO MORTAL IS MEANT TO SURVIVE.

In the frozen Alaskan wilderness, former state trooper Jenna Darrow survives an unspeakable breach of body and soul. But with her narrow escape comes an even greater challenge. For strange changes are taking place within her, as she struggles to understand—and control—a new hunger. To do so, she will seek shelter in the Boston compound of the Order, an ancient race of vampire warriors whose very existence is shrouded in mystery. Perhaps the most mysterious of them all is Brock, a brooding, dark-eyed alpha male whose hands hold the power to comfort, heal . . . and arouse.

As she recovers under Brock’s care, Jenna finds herself drawn to the Order’s mission: to stop a ruthless enemy and its army of assassins from subjecting Earth to a reign of terror. Yet in spite of their resolve, a purely physical relationship without strings soon binds Brock and Jenna together with a desire fiercer than life and stronger than death itself—until a secret from Brock’s past and Jenna’s own mortality challenges their forbidden love to the ultimate trial by fire.

The ordeal she suffered left Jenna frail in both body and mind. Jenna never expected to love again after the loss of her husband and daughter four years ago. She existed day to day on a sort of autopilot – until her home was invaded by an ancient, otherworldly being who forced her to make an impossible choice. Brock, a powerful, stoic Breed Warrior was interested only in performing his job flawlessly. Keeping Jenna safe and alleviating the pain from her injuries was Brock’s responsibility. His assignment definitely did not include falling in love with the frail, stubborn human woman. When Jenna awakes she finds herself thousands of miles from her home in a secret underground facility. She wants nothing more than to bury the trauma of the attack and return home. Unfortunately, returning home is not an option for Jenna and she is forced to come to terms with her new reality. After a bumpy start, she is surprised to discover new friendships and a renewed purpose in her life. She and Brock come to care for each other as the days pass but both are adamant that any sort of lasting commitment is out of the question. Both continue to be haunted by their past failures. This stand-alone novel was easy to read and had lots of excitement and several hot, passionate sex scenes. I have not yet read any of the earlier books but had no trouble picking up the general premise of the series. I would certainly be interested in reading the other books. I particularly liked that Jenna was an astute, capable fighter in her own right. I felt a couple of scenes would have benefited from a tighter, more fluid choreography. The author, Ms Adrian, is a remarkable storyteller. She does not overload the narrative with the back story but provides enough of the history to make the character’s motivations convincing. It was an enjoyable read.LaurieReviewer for Coffee Time Romance & Moreread more

Lara Adrian has created a world of vampires where the Breed Order is protecting humans and the Breed from rogues and the ultimate threat of Dragos. 8th book in the series and I’m definitely enjoying the story line for our two main characters. Anxious to see where the next few books go given some of the great accomplishments in this book and in the overall plot. I felt the book wrapped up a little too quickly, where there may have been some items in between that could have been shortened. However, it was hard for me to find any places to take out, since to enjoy the characters, you needed the storylines. Most of the focus and back story has been established and I do enjoy that there is not too much retelling. By now in this series you are reading it because you want to and you know the past. We went a little sci fi in this book, and quite honestly I’m not upset about it. I’ve already come to terms with Adrian’s origin of this Breed and I don’t mind the sci fi fix at all. If you are looking to keep to some ‘tradition’ of vampires this may not be the series for you, but if you enjoy a good read – grab it, there is no sparkling day walkers (I’m not hating on twilight), but rather just an interesting twist. I finished this book in less than a day because it kept me turning the page.read more

Taken by Midnight
3.5 Stars

Synopsis:
After being attacked by the Ancient, Jenna Darrow finds herself struggling to understand the changes going on around and inside her. Not only must she come to terms with the changes occurring within her own body and with the existence of vampires in the world but also with her inexplicable attraction to Brock, a Breed warrior who has the power either to heal or destroy her heart forever…

Review:
The last two books in the series have been hit or miss for me (Ashes was a miss but Shades was an amazing hit). Unfortunately, Taken by Midnight is more miss than hit, although there are some highlights such as the continuing story of the battle against Dragos and the search for the missing Breedmates. I really enjoyed the fact that the women of the Order take an active role in the story and are not merely window dressing.

Another positive aspect is the information provided regarding Hunter, the cold and logical warrior who has fascinated me from book 5, and Chase who seems to be coping with some serious issues. I am eagerly awaiting their stories.

The romance is the most disappointing aspect of the book because, even though Jenna and Brock are interesting as individual characters, their relationship lacks the chemistry and intensity of connection that characterizes the other couples in the series. While you cannot help but sympathize with Jenna’s suffering, it is difficult to completely identify with someone who is completely immersed in their pain and guilt to the extent that they have almost lost the will to live. Brock, on the other hand, is an amazing hero, loving, patient and protective but his attraction to Jenna didn’t mesh with me.

Overall, the writing flows and the action scenes are excellent. However, many questions remain unanswered regarding Jenna’s transformation and I hope that details will be forthcoming in the next installments.

So much potential but so awkwardly put together. The only reason I keep reading these is because I have a friend who keeps lending them to me, but I think it's time for me to just say no to this series.

I really enjoyed this story. It's one of my favorite series, and this was just as great as the others. I only wished it was longer because I think there is so much to tell in this world she built. Having said that, I still think she spent just enough time on every angle to bring closure and not feel rushed. I loved Brock. He was considerate, sexy, and obviously in love with Jenna. I loved Jenna too. I thought they had great chemistry. I also enjoyed the parts about Dragos. I don't like when an author spends too much time on the bad guys, and I thought this story had just the right amount.

Jenna Darrow left her job as state trooper because she could'nt cope any more, the death of her husband and child in an accident she blamed herself for left her feeling broken inside. Then she was kidbapped by a vampire who tortured her for days, and when she's rescued there's something he's done to her, something that will change her life forever. The Breed come to her rescue, but she chafes against the restrictions they impose. However Brock awakens feelings inside her and the two of them have to explore what's happened and what's going to happen with her. It's interesting, felt like a different twist in the series, and boy they won't be able to ignore Jenna or put her to one side, she's a warrior all the way.Cover art is completely out of whack with the actual book.
