Nicole St. James was a nice woman. An innocent, pretty, twentysomething schoolteacher with her life ahead of her. But as the angel of death, it's Keenan's job to take that life away. So when a vampire attacks Nicole, Keenan is not supposed to snap and take out the vampire instead. It cost him his wings--but she's worth it.
Except when Keenan catches up to his pretty schoolteacher, she's not so innocent anymore. Hot red lipstick, tight black shorts and long white fangs--she's ready to kick the asses of anyone who helped turn her into a damn bloodsucker. Unless that ass is unusually shapely and attached to a certain fallen angel. Even with all of heaven and half of hell after them, someone will have to teach Keenan about the fun kinds of sin. . .

Cynthia Eden has quickly become one of my favorite adult paranormal authors and Angel of Darkness just reaffirms why I love her books so much! It was filled with all the elements we have come to expect from her, fast paced action, intriguing mythology and an alluring romance that will leave you craving more. We enter this story with how Keenan meets Nicole for the first time. She is marked for death and he is the angel that is supposed to lead her to the next life. However, he has been watching her for a couple of weeks and has formed an attachment to her, which is a problem because angels are not supposed to feel anything. No emotion, no pain, no pleasure, nothing, but with Nicole his senses start to awaken and when the moment comes to let her die he can’t do it. As a result, he is cast out and sent to Earth and becomes a fallen angel. The only thing that gets him through it is the thought that he saved Nicole. When he finally finds her six months later he is crushed to discover that she has become a vampire. Even though she has turned into a creature he has always despised, he still has feelings that he cannot control around her and he can’t seem to stay away from the one woman he should have already let die. One of the reasons I have come to enjoy Cynthia’s books is her ability to blend the action and the romance. Each of her books has enough danger and mystery to keep you interested and plenty romance to leave you swooning. Her males are always alpha in nature and Keenan was no exception. He protects Nicole with a fierce passion while trying to sort through all these new emotions that are assaulting him constantly. Nicole on the other hand is just trying to adjust to being a vampire and not kill people when the thirst for blood overwhelms her. She knows Keenan is just trying to protect her and she longs to have someone in her life that will remain by her side, but she fears once he discovers everything she has done since becoming a vampire, he will detest her and leave her lonely once more. Cynthia also weaves a fantastic mythology that overlaps from previous series to combine into one all engrossing world. Many of Cynthia’s previous books plots are referenced in this world which just adds more knowledge to the ever evolving mythology. You do not need to read her previous books to understand this one by any means, especially since it is the first in a new series, but it did excite me to hear about previous characters and how all the lives intertwine with one another. While the obstacles that stand in Keenan and Nicole’s way seem to be endless at times, the drama never felt forced. Every barricade erected in front of them was faced realistically and was not thrown in just to add more tension for the sake of an interesting plot. Cynthia’s writing style continues to be intriguing as she weaves stories filled with interesting plots, addicting mythology and dynamic characters. As for the secondary characters, there were not too many, but the one that stood out most for me was Sam. He is another fallen angel who fell centuries ago when he killed hundreds of people that were not destined to die that day. He is painted in the worst light amongst angel society and is thought to be evil to his core. Sam was a question mark for me for a majority of the book. I started out thinking he was the bad guy, but as the plot unfolded his motives became unclear and I was not quite sure which side he was even on. He plays they villain angle, but I am wondering if that is just a façade. I am hoping that Sam will be the focus of the next book since his “heroine” has already been alluded to. Well, at least I hope she has. I know this is going to be a series, but the direction for the next book in unknown so I will have to keep fingers crossed that Sam gets his time in the spotlight.Overall, this is another fantastic book from Cynthia. She continues to wow me again and again and her books never have a dull moment. They will keep you fully engrossed from the very first page and you will not be able to come up for air until the last sentence. I am very excited to see where this series will go and can’t wait to see what Cynthia has waiting in the wings for us.read more

Nicole St. James is a schoolteacher on The List and it’s not a good list. She’s supposed to die one night in a filthy alley when she is attacked by a vampire. Keenan is an Angel of Death who was supposed to touch her and take her from the mortal realm. Instead, while Nicole is fighting to stay alive, he hesitates then touches the vampire, killing him instead of Nicole. Uh, oh…Keenan has broken the rules and must be punished. His sentence is to be a Fallen while Nicole ends up a vampire. Then it gets really interesting.I have read many books by Cynthia Eden and have yet to be disappointed. 'Angel of Darkness' is not an exception. I loved this story set in the same world as the Night Watch series. If you haven’t read the Night Watch series, don’t worry. They do not make an appearance and are only briefly mentioned, so if you’re anal, *cough* I mean orderly, like me when it comes to reading a series in order, you won’t be lost or annoyed if you like to read a series, even other interconnected series, in order. In other words, if you’re like me, you’ll be fine because this book stands alone as the first in a new series. There is plenty of action from beginning to end interspersed with humor and a buffet of yummy hot sexiness. Smooth-flowing, no plot holes, excellent dialogue and action scenes and I did mention the yummy hot sexiness, right?I’m really looking forward to the next book 'Angel Betrayed' due out July 1st, 2012.*The publisher provided a copy of this book to me for review. Review Courtesy of Dark Faerie Tales Quick & Dirty: A dark, sexy paranormal romance that will make you wish you had an angel of your own. Opening Sentence: He’d been created for one purpose—death. The Review: Keenan is an angel of death. His touch is deadly. He touches people at the time of their deaths and collects their souls for the afterlife. Angels do not feel emotion and Keenan is beginning to feel emotion. He has had his eye on Nicole ever since her name appeared on his death list. He is unaware of his feelings towards her until he watches her fight to live and he realizes he can’t let her die. His touch kills Nicole’s attacker and allows her a second chance at life. Keenan is at once thrown into the pits of hell where his wings are burned off and then left on the earthly plain to regain his memories and strength. Nicole is a schoolteacher until the unfortunate night she is attacked by a vampire. She sees Keenan watching her and asks for his help but he does nothing to stop her attacker. She fights for her life and wounds the vampire whom collapses on top of her as she succumbs to her wounds. She wakes up fully healed with a huge thirst for blood. Cut to six months later, Keenan finds Nicole in Mexico. He does not realize right away that she has been changed but it doesn’t take him long to figure it out. Keenan lusts after Nicole and wants to protect her but Nicole is not the helpless woman she once was. They must fight off one bad guy after another. Their journey includes running from a powerful angel, a fallen angel, demons, coyotes and vampire hunters. Keenan and Nicole’s heat for each other is evident once they both stop and take a breather from all the running. Keenan is one sexy angel. He has no qualms about doing whatever he has to do in order to keep Nicole alive. He’ll even make a deal with another, equally sexy, fallen angel even though it is hard to tell where his loyalties lie. Nicole is a tough, smart woman. She has easily adapted to her situation and she makes no excuses for what she is. She doesn’t want Keenan to fight her fights for her, she stands up for herself and doesn’t hide behind Keenan. Angel of Darkness is packed with action. The world building is satisfactory, explaining the different realms and how the different Other creatures interact with one another. There is potential for so much more to this series. There was no huge info dump to explain everything, it was told in pieces at a time. I did feel there were a few plot holes to the story, the major one being how easily Keenan could find Nicole in Mexico and Texas whenever she runs away from him but later in the story he can’t find her. I also felt like I was kind of jipped out of certain story elements. Nicole had so many things happen to her in the six months that were simply bypassed. Delving deeper into these events would have made the overall story richer. Some things are mentioned in passing but they really weighed heavily on the person she is now. The story is told from multiple points of view from Keenan and Nicole to several of the bad guys that are after them. I absolutely cannot wait for the second installment, Angel Betrayed. The characters in that book are introduced in this book and I really want to know their stories. Angel of Darkness is a hot book with some dark issues but Keenan and Nicole do eventually find their HEA. If angels and vampires are your thing, then I recommend this book. Notable Scene: He ran at her with the stake up. His buddies took Keenan, swarming him. Her teeth burned, her claws lengthened, and when Mike lunged at her with that stake – She just ripped it out of his hands, broke it, and tossed the pieces behind her. That didn’t stop Mike. No, he swung at her and slammed his fist right into her face. Definitely remember that. The bloodlust rose but she stumbled back. “That’s right, run, get ready to bleed.” Um, no. She wouldn’t be bleeding for him. His fist came at her again. She caught it in her left hand. Then her fist went at him, plowing into his cheek. Not the light hit of her prevamp days. Nicole swung with a blow strong enough to break Mike’s jaw. When the bone crunched, she knew the punch had broken his jaw. He kicked out, his booted heel aiming for her stomach, but she twisted and he missed her, and he fell to the ground. “I’m sorry about your brother,” she said the words between pants. “If I had to do it all again . . .” But there’d been no choice at the end. He’d fought her and if she hadn’t killed him . . . he would have taken her head. “Fuckin’ bitch . . .” Mike shoved up and yanked a knife out of his boot. “He should’ve killed you.” He shot off the ground and sliced with his knife. The blade never touched h0er skin. Keenan grabbed Mike’s hand, twisted, broke the guy’s wrist, and the knife clattered to the ground. “I said you’d lose this hand,” Keenan reminded him. Nicole St. James hadn't figured on falling prey to a vampire. Fighting to stay alive, she catches sight of another man and begs his help, not recognizing he's an angel of death awaiting the inevitable. Keenan has been stalking Nicole for weeks, and his unwilling yearning for her compels him to kill the vampire instead. Retribution for disobedience is swift. Six months later, Keenan, now one of the Fallen, is drowning his sorrows when Nicole struts into the bar, manifestly no longer human. Keenan doesn't know that Nicole is wanted for the murders she committed as a neophyte vampire, while Nicole is unaware that Keenan can regain his angelic status if he kills her. Motorcycle chases, bar fights, and Keenan's discovery of lust drive this crisp, heart-pounding, smart thriller. Eden doesn't bring much that's new, but she puts it together far better than most.
