She is supposed to be happy because she has the husband, the three wonderful but boisterous kids and wonderful friends and is living in suburbia, but she isn’t and even she doesn’t know why. She has the normal difficulties like everybody else; the crime in South Africa, her sister that moved to England and in between trying to make a living, but somehow she copes. Then her friend Rose finds out that she has cancer. She tries to help and supports Rose through her tough struggle to survive and get through each day but her own problems seem to take over. Her marriage is slowly but surely falling apart and she blames herself and questions herself. What is she doing wrong and what can she do better? Maybe if she tries harder! She feels like a failure and can’t even manage to have a successful daydream of Tom Cruise. All her efforts to change and make some changes come to nothing and she wants to give up. She cries on her friend, Mary’s shoulder who is in the same boat as her, all the while they try to make things easier for Rose. Together they impulsively go off to buy Rose a new tit after her mastectomy and count themselves blessed that they don’t need to find her a wig as well as her hair miraculously didn’t fall out despite of the chemo. But things take a turn for the worse when her father also falls ill, also with cancer and his life is hanging on a thread. While negotiating her difficult marriage, trying to cope with the normal demands of life and maybe losing her father, she is forced to look at where she comes from, where she is and where she is going. Eventually she faces the reality of the demise of her marriage. She considers a divorce but that bring new doubts and questions. Will she be able to actually go through with it?; How will she survive financially?; Will God hate her forever? As she is not sure about the answers to these questions she becomes depressed and lie under her purple blanket day after day but eventually and little by little she manage to get up and face life again, making choices based on what is the best for her.
This is the story of three women faced with lives difficulties but finding strength in each other. It is the story of how we need each other but also acknowledges that there are certain things that you have to go through by yourself; no-one can walk the road on your behalf. It is the story of how people react differently and make different choices even if they are faced with similar situations. It is the story of surviving and survival, of being triumphant over lives challenges and being able to always stand up again. It is a story of finding love and loosing love and searching for a God of love and mercy in between everything. She asks questions like: Why are there pain and suffering?; Where is God and why does he allow this?; Is there a God? Her life becomes a journey of discovering the meaning of life, the reasons for suffering, her strengths and who she is.
If you ever asked any of these questions, this book is for you.
