Critically considered one of the single finest works of the twentieth century, Proust’s seven-volume masterwork In Search of Lost Time (À la Recherche du temps perdu) has been emulated (and parodied) by countless modern writers. Swann’s Way is the first volume, containing the most iconic moment of the entire work: the “episode of the madeleine,” in which years of memories are triggered in the narrator by the simple taste of a madeleine cake dipped in tea. This translation, by C.K. Scott Moncrieff, was the very first translation of À la Recherche into another language. It titled the entire work Remembrance of Things Past, borrowing a phrase from Shakespeare. Although more contemporary translations have abandoned this title, Moncrieff’s text endures as a classic.
