From the Publisher

The Money Trader novel is a romantic fantasy—a story about life and love, about faith and hope…and personal redemption.

On a borrowed $25,000, newly-minted speculator Jake Buchanan makes over five million dollars on a huge speculative trade in the silver market. Before long he is trading and making more money than he ever imagined possible. Just when he thinks he has it all—money, a drop-dead gorgeous wife and a burgeoning new career—his luck abruptly changes.

Over a grinding three years he loses everything, his money, his wife, most of his friends, and all his self-confidence. Jake is down, but not out. The archetypal underdog hero, he’s a kind of Rocky Balboa in pinstripes. And like Rocky, Jake fights—sometimes comically but always heroically—to make a comeback.

Then he makes an unexpected score in the 1987 stock market crash. Financially he’s back on his feet. But will he finally find love and happiness?

At the heart of the story is Jake’s involvement with two rather extraordinary women, his steely but still loyal ex-wife Janet, and Denise—a vivacious Latin beauty. The Money Trader is a must-read novel for anyone who has ever known the sweet taste of success, the bitter disappointment of defeat, the empty isolation of being alone, and the pure joy of being in love.

Crimes of the Heart

S.B. Like many of his novels, Spanish author Javier Marías’ new book, Thus Bad Begins, isn’t exactly a mystery, though it is mysterious. Here, the 65-year-old perennial Nobel favorite tells the story of Juan de Vere, a young man working for a film director, Eduardo Muriel. The older man assigns his apprentice the task of finding out a secret about a longtime friend. Meanwhile, de Vere is intrigued by the cold relationship between Muriel and his depressed wife Beatriz—at some point in their past, she did something unforgivable, also a secret, and de Vere wants to find out what.
