Chapter 1: Introduction

There is a hunger within us for success in life. In whatever things we do, no one in the right mind wants failure. We all want success in life - in relationships, academic pursuits, jobs, careers, marriage, family, investments, recreations etc. The pursuit of happiness and success are the basic drive and desire of our lives. Yet in reality, we often experience setbacks, disappointments and failures in things that are important to us. Sometimes it seems difficult and hard to achieve any success and we feel miserable and powerless. At other times, there is an empty feeling even when we do succeed in getting what we want. Have you sometimes felt this way before?

To start with, 'success' is such a fascinating and yet confusing subject. There are many interpretations, definitions and unanswered questions about 'success'. What is the definition of ‘success’? Does 'success' means having a lot of money? Being famous? Belonging to a high-class society? Acquiring a position of power and influence?

Does success brings happiness? Or happiness brings success? Why it seems that some people are more successful than others? Why it seems that some people are happier even though they seem to be less successful? Why are some people more effective in getting what they want? What is the secret of their success? Is there a formula to success? Are there really principles we can learn and apply to guarantee success in everything we do? What is the true meaning and measure of ‘success' anyway?

At the heart of this book, we want to explore these issues and search for answers to these crucial questions of life. In this book, we will draw insights, principles and find answers from the wisdom books - the Bible and Sun Tzu, the art of War. We will examine how the lives of ordinary peoples, as recorded in the Bible, being transformed into man and woman of greatness. We will put on the lenses of Sun Tzu, the art of war, and derive universal principles of success.

Why drawing lessons from the Bible and Sun Tzu, the art of war? As we know the Bible is full of divine wisdom and principles about life. The ancient book, Sun Tzu, the art of war, is a classic book written almost 2,500 years ago and yet still relevant in our times. Many principles and wisdom from these two books are universal and timeless and we can draw inspirations from these wisdom books for application in our lives.

Chapter 2: Power for Success Begins Within You

In the Bible, the book of Proverbs (4:23) said, Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life. Your heart is the source of all the issues in your life. Your heart is the soil where the seeds of life are sown. In the course of time, the seeds of your life, both good and bad seeds, will grow into fruit-bearing trees in your life.

A good tree will produce good fruits. A bad tree will produce bad fruits. A good tree cannot produce bad fruits and a bad tree cannot produce good fruits. This law of life, or law of seeding and harvesting, is self-evident and universal. It follows then that preparing a heart of good soil, sowing good seeds of success, cultivating the tree of success, will eventually produce a harvest of success.

Power for success then begins with you. It begins with your heart - the wellspring of your life. The power for success is within your heart.

Your heart – the Wellspring of Life

Where is your heart? Your heart resides at the centre of your being. It is a combination of your spirit, soul, mind, emotion and will. You perceive and interact with the physical and visible environment with your senses – sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch - but for the metaphysical environment, you perceive with your thoughts, feelings and belief which affects your will and how your heart makes decisions.

Proverbs says "For as a man thinks in his heart, so is he .
