    Going to California

Lurch hadn’t said anything about a girlfriend living with him when he invited me to stay at his place in California. I was a little suprised, seeing how he’d been going on about how sexy and horny all those California girls were. Guess I thought he’d been living a bachelor’s life. But what really surprised me was just who he was living with.

I was struck by Loralie’s beauty straight off. She was sort of plain, not wearing any makeup, and she had a tall, slender figure with naturally curly, reddish-brown hair, freckles dotting the bridge of her nose, and skin as smooth as the water on Broken Bow Lake before dawn. The way she glided around, I swear she must have been part angel. Though I think she was part devil too.

How Lurch landed one like that, I didn’t know. Until I talked to her.

Jesse, that can be a be a boy’s or a girl’s name, can’t it? she said. We were sitting at the kitchen table the morning after I got there, drinking coffee while Lurch got himself ready for work.

I suppose, I said, not liking the comment.

You ever wear makeup like a girl?

I raised my eyebrows. Come again?

One time I put makeup on this guy and dressed him like a girl, just for fun, you know. He had kind of a small frame and he was clean shaven, so you could barely tell he was a guy if you looked quick. When Lurch came home, we were on the couch—

Now Loralie, Lurch interrupted, I’m not so sure Jesse wants to hear all your stories just yet. He put his hands on her shoulders and leaned over to kiss her and whisper something in her ear. She nodded and smiled and I just sat there wondering what kind of person Lurch was shacking up with.

Lurch worked the counter at one of those storage places. He worked different shifts and was out of the apartment a good deal. Loralie said she was in between jobs—though I don’t recall her actually looking for one—and we were there by ourselves a lot of the time. I didn’t think anything of it at first, except that I might have to put up with some strange conversation.

I quickly realized I’d have to put up with a lot more than that.

She would walk around in the skimpiest get-ups: cut-off jeans that showed half her ass, tight little shirts that left
