This book is dedicated in memory of my mother and father-

This is the second edition of this book and it has been revised.

    Sinners and Butterflies

Once there was a caterpillar crawling on a weed.

Once there was a sinner doing a bad deed.

The caterpillar stopped, the inner voice said, deviate.

The sinner stopped, an inner voice asked, why do you hate?

The caterpillar began to change, spinning a cocoon.

The sinner began to change, Jesus I’ll follow you soon.

The caterpillar, now cocooned, changing outside and in.

The sinner, too, changing, No more do I want to sin.

The caterpillar changed from ugly to beautiful and fine.

The sinner changed from drunk to no more wine.

The caterpillar, totally changed, now a beautiful butterfly.

The sinner totally changed, now a Christian in God’s eye.

The butterfly ascends and glides in the sky so blue.

The Christian leaves to preach the Word that is true.

    FOREWORD

I have written this book, hopefully, to assist new or baby Christians to understand and be inspired to read the Bible. I have put into this book some of the things that I wondered about after I became saved. I have also written about some of my past mistakes, according to God’s Word, and hopefully, when people read about them they will not make these same mistakes. In some instances this book is thought provoking or hard on people. In my experience I have learned that those stories or sermons that bothered me the most were about something that I have done wrong, or some way of mine that I should change, but haven’t. I have not written this book to any one person. I have named no one that I got a thought from through their words or actions. Hopefully, this book will help all who read it to be inspired to walk closer with Jesus and study the Word of God. Sometimes in our daily lives it is a struggle to be a good Christian, but bearing in mind all he has done for us, shouldn’t we try harder to obey him. Isn’t it better to try to please God more than please man? I recommend you have a Bible, a pen/pencil and paper close by, so you can look up scripture, make notes, or answer questions contained in this book. By looking up the scripture, you will be accomplishing one of the things I am trying to get you to do: read and study the Word of God.

    Foreword to revised version-2012

It’s been seventeen years since I first penned this little book. So much has changed in my life. As of this writing (Feb.2012) I have almost completed a Master of Divinity degree at Asbury Theological Seminary.

In this revised edition I have added a section of questions for each chapter. These questions, hopefully, will assist in study classes that may use this book. They are located at the end of each chapter and the answer key is in the appendix in the back of the book.

I have also gone through the book and corrected many grammatical errors.

    Chapter 1

    The Basics: Getting Started

The greatest question of life is: Do I accept or reject Jesus Christ? The answer, one way or the other, will affect your life forever. By accepting and having faith in Jesus, you will receive eternal life. But, by rejecting Him you will receive eternal damnation in hell.

Only by confessing our sins, accepting Jesus Christ as our personal savior and believing He died on the cross for us, can we go to heaven. (Romans 10:9) That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved."

Our citizenship in heaven is automatic when we meet the qualifications. If you haven’t met the qualifications, please, right now, turn to Chapter 8 and qualify yourself. Don’t continue to be part of the divine layaway plan- sin now and pay later. Look at Romans 6:23, For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. When you sin, technically you forfeit the right to live. It’s only through God’s mercy you’re still alive.

I’ve heard people say, Christians don’t have fun or a good time. That’s funny in it’s self because I’ve been having a great time. One thing that needs to be remembered at this point is, that God, through His Word, is not trying to stop you from having fun, or a good time. He’s doing it to save your soul from eternal damnation in hell.

As you study God’s Word and act on it, your attitude about fun things will change. You’ll notice the things that are fun to you now are more in line with the Bible and not of the flesh.
