    Introduction

    This book has been written to give you an understanding of French Law. It is often difficult when you leave one country for another to know what to expect. This book has been written to help you have a long happy life in France. This book is aimed to cover issues that you may be confronted with during your life in France. One will first examine the origins of what the law is based upon and it’s principles, and how they work today.

    Next, there will be an overview on family law, looking at divorce, marriage, separation, living together and civil partnership. Looking at what you need to do should you have relationship problems. There will also be a section on children, their rights and adoption.

    Obviously one hopes that you will need to work in France. It is difficult to know the law and what your rights are. It is hoped that after reading this section you will become familiar with your working rights, and rights to retirement.

    Insurance plays a major role in France. It is important to know what you need to insure and how to do it.

    Inheritance rights is rather Napoleonic. The law hasn’t changed here and it is important to understand how you can be affected should you be in a relationship where there are stepchildren involved. It isn’t always plain sailing and there has been substantial evidence where people not knowing the law have ended up on the streets without their belongings.

    If you should be unfortunate enough to be a victim of a criminal, this section covers your rights and how you can deal with them. It’s not always easy to report an incident with the police. The same goes if you have been convicted of a crime you know nothing about, or you have committed.

    In France it is important to know your medical rights, and your right to treatment. Explaining what you need to know and do should you fall ill.

    Knowing the legal forms and how to fill them in are equally important. One has attempted to give exemplary examples that are both filled in and left blank with a glossary of legal terms to help you.

    The oneness is now up to you. One hopes that you will have enough guidance to help you with your new life in France, and wishes you Bonne Chance as you come to grips with a new culture and lifestyle.
