Chapter 1
The Eagle Reborn
The blinding light faded and Dan stepped out from under the Arch. Dan looked up at the Arch behind him and realized with some relief that it must have traveled with him to the past, and that the portal would still be there when he needed it.
It was night and he was still at the Bald Spot. Even with the abrupt nightfall, for a moment, he wondered if the Arch hadn’t worked. There was only one way to find out.
Rushing through the forest, his pulse racing, he had a strong sense of déjà vu. As he broke out of the forest, he looked toward the dormitories. No lights were on. Good. He began running toward the main building and saw a light on the top floor come on. The Principal’s office. Even better. He didn’t want to have to wake Mr. Loeren.
Clearly the Arch had worked, since Snisnar appeared to be as good as new. It felt surreal running across the grounds toward a school that only a few minutes before had been in ruins. Well, more accurately, over six months from now…this time traveling thing was going to be difficult, grammatically speaking…
He made himself invisible and rushed into the school, heading directly for Mr. Loeren’s office. As he traversed the vacant corridors, he felt as if he were in a haunted castle, but the ghosts within its walls were not dead – they were living and breathing. The only real ghosts on that campus were Dan’s own memories.
He approached Mr. Loeren’s office and knocked on the door. He had barely finished knocking before the door opened.
Hello, Daniel,
Mr. Loeren said with a slightly sad smile.
Dan never did get used to Mr. Loeren being able to see him when he was invisible…
Please do come in,
the resurrected Principal invited, stepping aside so that Dan could enter.
Once the door was closed, Dan made himself visible again.
Mr. Loeren, I’ve come back…from the future –
Dan cringed slightly at his unintentional and equally unavoidable reference to the movie he had watched once at the orphanage – to warn you…
Wait,
Mr. Loeren cut him off sharply, taking a seat at his desk. "I do not wish to underestimate whatever motivations you may have for meddling in time travel, but before you continue, I must warn you of the dangers of what you are trying to do. There is no way for you to be able to predict the consequences of changing the events of the past. By righting even the slightest wrong, you could inadvertently trigger a much greater evil.
That said,
the Principal added with a resigned sigh, "I am fully aware that once you have set your mind on something, even I cannot dissuade you from continuing on your set course. Nonetheless, I shall take no part in your meddling by receiving information about the future from you. What you do with your past, present and future is, of course, your business, but I will not take part in changing
