    CHAPTER ONE - BARRETT

Barret was annoyed by the flies. He swished his brushy short colt tail as fast as he could. He stomped his tiny hooves. He shook his head. His Mom stood over him and swung her tail from side to side to help him. Exhausted, he laid down in the cool grass and rolled and rolled until his coat was damp.

His Mom whinnied, Barrett, you’re a good colt.

Barrett stood up and grunted. His Mom nickered to Barrett, You’re getting to be a big colt now. You can play with the other colts. Go on. Go play.

Barrett timidly approached two colts nearby. He pawed his tiny hoof, Hi, I’m Barrett. What’s your name?

Heeee, heeee! neighed Patch, a pumpkin colored colt, who was hiding behind Mouse. I’m Patch. The white patch on his stomach shook as his belly jiggled.

The gray colt whinnied, Hi, my name is Mouse. Mouse’s pink nose and gray coat gave away his name.

Barrett answered, Can we be friends? He pointed his ears at the two colts. The other two colts shook their heads up and down, Yes we can be friends. All three colts stood side by side and played all afternoon.

The pasture was huge, and the small herd of mares and colts stood under the large trees out of the afternoon sun. Barrett shook his black glossy mane and swished his short, black, bushy tail, trying to imitate his Mom.

Barrett was a Thoroughbred, son of a famous race- horse. This small brown colt had a destiny which would prove he was worthy of being the great Thoroughbred he was.

    CHAPTER TWO - THE PASTURE

The next day, Barrett and his Mom were eating grass with the other mares and colts. Barrett looked for his new friends nearby. Patch, Mouse! He was so excited, he reared straight up on is hind legs and jumped in the air.

    Wow! whinnied Patch.

We can do that, neighed Mouse. Suddenly all three colts took off across the huge pasture running as fast as they could go.

Barrett’s Mom was getting worried, so she neighed, Come back Barrett right now! Come back here!

Patch’s Mom and Mouse’s Mom whinnied, You two come back here! Come back right now!

All three colts stopped and looked back at their Mom’s. Whew! Look at us! Look at us! Then they trotted back to their Mom’s under the tree.

Snorting, Barrett pushed up against his Mom. What’s grass? asked Barrett. Why do we have tails? Let me see, demanded Barrett as he pushed his way past his Mom so he could be with Mouse and Patch.

Barrett, Patch, and Mouse spied a patch of white daisies growing near a large overhanging tree. Brightly painted butterflies perched in the daisy patch, flipping their wings in the air. The butterflies whispered, We’re butterflies. We fly and wave our wings.

    Barrett pushed his small brown
