About this ebook

A concise but passionately written book with a descriptive and literary style, about the 'hidden beauties' of some less visited corners especially in North, North-East and Central India. The book is special because it is not written by a professional tour-promoter. It rather represents the personal perspective of the author. Tips for travellers are added bonus!

    IMPORTANT TIPS FOR FOREIGNERS

In a poem, I once read about the story of a farmer boy who was brought up in a distant village of England. Old men of village, who had never been to London or any 'civilized' places of their country, would relate bizarre stories about these cities. Most of these stories were based on the exaggerated accounts of third persons who might have travelled to these cities. The small child would listen fervently to these stories and he developed very idealistic, dreamy ideas especially about London. In his imagination, London had golden roads and the sun shone there more brilliantly than in his village. People there were like angels and fairies -- extremely beautiful and august! Fruits and flowers had extra freshness and houses touched the sky!

Then the boy grew up and had a real chance to visit London. He was lost in his imagination and excited by the mere thought of travelling to his 'dream city' where everything was perfect and pure. He landed in London and, alas! his dreams collapsed. Roads were not golden, smokes from chimneys fogged the sky and people were more cunning than simple guys of his village! He rubbed his eyes and got up into a new reality.

Most people who plan to visit India are not different from that innocent boy. They know India from glorious books and fervent accounts; they make a mental sketch of so-called 'spiritual aura' in which they think this country abounds. Awake from your dream then. Indians are as commonplace as any other people of India. They might have some better traits and aspects of nature but that is true about every country. People of each country show some racial or national attributes, unique of their kind and India is no exception. But, from a general aspect, this is not a 'spiritual' country to the best of my knowledge and experiences as an Indian. It has thousands of temples, it has many religions, but temples and religions, mosques and churches are no proofs of 'spirituality'. In my opinion, India is not unlike those many countries whose past was glorious but whose present states-of-affairs in social and spiritual contexts are like those depicted in my Hindi novel 'Polititia Ka Dragon'. So, before you decide to travel to India, open your eyes to some practical aspects so that you can truly enjoy your trip and travel safely.

    1. Your Visa - Check the type of visa you have got. If it is a tourist visa, you may also need further special permissions to visit some states and territories of India, like Sikkim and J & K. Also find out about the travel safety in some specific areas, such as North-east where extremist activities are often on the surge. So, before planning to visit these places, consult with your embassy/consulate in advance. Your visa may also require you to notify the local police of India on your arrival. Take care of this point to avoid any inconvenience.

    2. Hotel Reservation - Most travellers visiting India would first come to New Delhi. An advance hotel reservation is preferable, especially when you are expected to reach late night. New Delhi, especially the Paharganj area (just opposite to New Delhi railway station) has a range of economy, budget and luxury hotels which may be viewed by searching on Google or Yahoo. Just type economy/budget hotels in New Delhi and see the results. You may also get phone numbers and/or email IDs of some hotels so you can inquire and book your room.

    3. Staying in Hotels: Take care of your belongings in the hotels. Do not leave your money, passport, valuables or important documents in the hotel room as your room may be cleaned in your absence and things may get stolen. Do not hand over any costly material to the hotel manager without getting a receipt,
