It was a warm night on 27 May 1981, as I sat on the patio contemplating how I might, somehow, wrangle a chance to fly a Boeing 747 Jumbo Jet. I conjured up this fiction story in which a fellow pilot and I were the last pilots in the world who were available to fly 747s. In this story we just couldn't be turned down. It was a case of supply and demand. All of the other pilots were busy. However, for the story to be plausible, it required a world-wide nuclear war.
