Summary

Gnatwing! A Farce for Clowns is Theatre-of-the-Absurd for youngsters. Featuring direct audience involvement in a frantic game of hide-and-seek, and a chase that mirrors animated cartoons, Gnatwing!—in clown face and exaggerated movement—is incredibly zany. Based on a Scandinavian folk tale, this simple play when read is, in performance, transformed into a wonderfully inspired madness.
After Gnatwing!s premiere, Robert Long, a sixth grade teacher, said, “In all my years of teaching and attending plays with school children, I’ve never before experienced anything like the enthusiastic audience participation I witnessed tonight. It was electric.”
Over the years, Mr. Long’s comments have been echoed by other teachers, parents, and adult audience members, as well as by the actors caught in the uproariously funny hide-and-seek climax of the play.

PRODUCTION HISTORY

Gnatwing!, written as an experiment in clown theatre with direct audience involvement, was first produced by a community theatre group in Washington State that was dedicated to excellence in theatre for children and all the young at heart. Since then, Gnatwing! has been produced by many theatre groups.

Under the auspices of the Washington State University Theatre Department and the WSU Office of Arts Education, Gnatwing! toured schools in Eastern Washington and Northern Idaho during the 1972 Spring Semester. The Chair of that prestigious department, Dr. Paul Wadleigh, wanted to do a touring play for children, and Gnatwing! filled the bill. A fast-paced, shoestring budget show taking less than an hour to perform, and with the props as well as the actors filling one station wagon, it proved (if proof were needed) that live theatre is fun and worth attending.

Prior to touring, Gnatwing! was presented on several occasions on the WSU campus, where it was enthusiastically received. Consequently, it was the Theatre Department’s only presentation during the Fine Arts Week on campus; and again during the Parents Weekend in May it surprised and delighted children and adults.

Also of note is that Gnatwing! is written to be performed outdoors on a lawn, and most of its productions have been so produced, although any performance space works well.

The idea for this farce came from a Scandinavian "old
