It was love at first sight. Amid the frenzied barking and prancing of a house full of Great Danes, one pup was shivering in the corner. Gracie. But when Dan Dye reached her, she struggled to her feet like a clumsy foal, raised her forehead to his, and announced, as clearly as if she had actually spoken the words, You know I'm the one. Now get me outta here!

By turns funny, moving, tender, and inspiring, Gracie's tale is a treat for every dog lover. There is Gracie's first morning, racing around Dan in the snowy yard. Gracie's first determination to prove to her step-sisters, Dottie the Dalmation and Sarah the Black Lab, that she's one of the girls. Gracie's defiant romance with a pint-size charmer named Byron, a Boston Terrier from the wrong side of the fence.

Then born of necessity, the eureka moment: When Gracie's delicate constitution starts turning into anorexia, Dan teaches himself how to cook, and in three days is baking her the cookies that will spur her appetite, launch Three Dog Bakery, and transform their lives forever.

Courage. Compassion. Kindness. Soul. Tenacity. And joy, above all, joy. These qualities Gracie possessed in abundance, and shared with everyone, human or canine, who had the good fortune to cross her path.

Great read for dog lovers more
I'm not a huge dog fan but out was still an enjoyable read. Not engrossing but some fun little vignettes, like the first time he attempts baking in response to his dog's dietary needs.more
I really enjoyed this book. I am not usually drawn to dog stories - or pet stories in general but, this one caught my interest for some reason. The writing style is engaging - very light and easy reading. The author's self deprecating humor works and doesn't get tiresome. My only complaint would be that I wish there were more explanation about how the Three Dog Bakery went from one store to a national chain. The story jumps from the sale of a few biscuits to grand openings in several stores in one day. I would have liked a bit more background about that dynamic but, since this is Gracie's story I can understand why that was not emphasized.

Great book overall. Gracie and the Girls will steal your heart.more
I give this book four stars for the witty, heart-felt sections which dealt directly with Gracie. I would have liked to give it 3.5 stars, truthfully. I'm afraid the sections dealing with the author's business -- a bakery for dogs -- read more like an infomercial than a story, and much of it I skipped. Having said that, where Dye did write about his relationship with Gracie, a deaf albino Great Dane who came into his life as a much-neglected puppy, I was utterly enthralled. He had me laughing out loud and yes, at the end I was moved to tears. This is a worthwhile book for anyone who loves dogs and understands the bond between dog and human, but don't feel bad if you want to ignore about a third of the book having to do with the business of selling dog biscuits.more
A book for dog lovers. Gracie is a great dane. Deaf, albino, and unwanted. I'm biased toward the book because I just brought one of those into my family. I enjoyed the book because it mirrored the experiences with my puppy.Dan's great dane became a picky eater, so he started making his own dog biscuits for Gracie. That blossomed into the Three Dog Bakery chain of stores, along with brief fame as the guy who fresh bakes dog treats.more
A quick easy read. A dog book that has humour and emotion plus tells the story of the creation of a successful business. Highly recommended.more
Very well written and touching book. If you like animals, you should definitely read this book about how Three Dog Bakery was formed.more
Nice quick fun book to read, not deep but had touching moments.more
I nice little book about the Great Dane that inspired a business. Not overly sweet, but quite endearing. Nicely written. A bit fluffy, but cute.more
This is such a sweet book! I love it but couldn't bear to read the end!more
This book should be on everyone's shelf! I was out walking my great dane one day when a neighbor asked if I had read this book. I went straight home and ordered it. I laughed, dog eared pages to read to my husband, and then cried until I thought I would break into pieces. This story is touching in so many ways - every dog lover would appreciate it! I still get teary eyed when I see Three Dog Bakery and treat my "babies" to doggie treats from the TDB cookbook often. If you have that "dog love" - you will enjoy this book!! Sweet amazing Gracie!more
This book was a recommendation by a fellow dog lover. If you love dogs, you'll love this book. I laughed a lot, related to the owners and cried at the end (really cried). If you're a dog lover, you will be touched by this book. I couldn't put it down. Be warned: after I finished, I begged my husband to adopt a deaf/blind Great Dane - we still don't have one, but our interest is there. I also had to get the cookbook.more
As with most books I read where the star of the show is a dog I have to be careful where I read it. On my lunch breaks (from my bookstore job) I often eat-out and read. I can't tell you how many times I laughed out loud (and even cried) getting all kinds of strange looks. Reading about Gracie was such a joy. I will seriously visit some Great Dane rescues the next time I'm ready to bring a new dog home. If you are a dog lover, or just an inspirational story lover this one is for you.more
