Nomadic Ice - James Aa. Keister

    Chapter One

What's it all coming too? Taylor asked, through the noise of the night club, knowing no one would hear him. Sara and the others were all crowded around a small table clearly large enough to sit only four. Taylor stood over her shoulder and tried to shout over the music. A methodical electronic wave of sound flowed n low reverberant rumbles and high frequencies that splashed out over the crowds of people sitting at tables and those that moved in elegant dancing patterns, each enticingly fascinating. The loose music had a randomizing effect on those caught in It's technological mind scape. The club was large but was filled to capacity, maybe beyond.

Hey Taylor, glad you could finally show your face. His friend James told him. Sit and grab a beer. We're going over the game plan. Taylor rounded the table and found an empty chair. After brushing old chip crumbs off the seat, he sat down next to Dan. James slid a beer over in front of him and grinned, with a sideways smile, then said. Thanks! Taylor was still lost in his own thoughts as he tried to listen in on the plan that Thela was grunting out above the music. He could feel the bitterness coating his thoughts. Strings of greasy grays were wrapping those thoughts as if to weakly mummify them. He had seen others trapped by the same bitter thoughts to long, hoarding the grayness, while it strangled all the color out of them. And now he found himself gripped by the same ugly claw he'd seen others enveloped in.

Hey man! James said while hitting his arm and snapping him out of whatever unreality he was sinking into and back to this one. The room was dim, but the scant lighting that flickered and danced, leaked through the shadowy casts, seemingly painful as it's brilliance gleamed in disoriented hues that hurt his eyes. Again James bumped his arm.

Hey man, you still having trouble with lights? Watching Taylor rub his eyes, trying to erase the lights annoying glow.

I'm sorry bro. I've just got a lot going on with all this.

Do you have your list done? Thela asked.

Yeah, it's all on the plane and ready. I've went over the flight plan with the pilot and made the two necessary arranged drop points and where we'll refuel. The rest is up to you guys.

Back at the lab, we found more traces of the enzymes we've been testing, and with the samples from the Arctic, we think that there's an abundant crop there.

And that's why we're going? Taylor told her. Thela was his head intern, she was bright and very intelligent, almost exceeding Taylor himself, but as long as she understood who was in charge and who was funding the project, all was well. She wore her hair black and she had donned dark clothes to match to change her whole appeal, to match the new terrain they were headed for. And in a cute whitewash way, stirring in silky swirls, she was as eerie as she was beautiful. Average build and pretty face that clearly needed no made up colors. She would be the one Taylor counted on most to keep the rest of the crew in line. Taylor had met her years earlier and they had become coworkers as well as great friends. Sometimes the competitiveness stirred between them, but Taylor always managed to come out on top. In more ways than none.

Hey! Sara shouted. Let's party! We're on a plane in the morning and I don't want to sit and listen to a bunch of plans. She got up and grabbed Dan' hand and dragged him off to the dance floor. Taylor looked over at Thela. Your gonna need to keep an eye on those two. He said with raised eyebrows.

Then who's gonna keep an eye on you two? James asked staring back and forth at Taylor and Thela.

Yeah, well what about you and Rachael? Thela countered.

What about Rachael? Rachael asked as she walked up behind Thela. Thela twisted around, eyes wide as if she'd been caught with her hand in the cookie jar. But this cookie jar was more than the proverbial concept we like to get into. It was more like the sinuous daunting of complex desires that unpredictably drives the privation of knots that can tangle the heart. Thela quickly wrapped her arms around Rachael's neck, hugging her tight. Hoping that it would be enough to throw Rachael off her line of questioning. She clearly did not want to let the cat out of the bag. When it came to James' feelings toward Rachael. But again she insisted.

    What about me?

Oh...we were just wondering if you were gonna miss all this. Thela told her. Rachael turned and looked at James, he smiled shyly at her, a singularly sweet smile she found attractive, but all she could do was stare. Hoping inside, he would find her attractive, she knew he was the one person who could save her soul and her loneliness, dying inside for that same intimate flow the rest shared. James stared back at her for as long as she stared at him, then when she finally let her eyes drop and wander off toward Thela again, James got up and moved around the table.

Hey you guys, Sara was right, enough planning. Let's go have some fun! His hand reached out to Rachael and waited as she eyed him with wide eyes. Then slowly she placed her hand into his, her eyes never leaving his eyes. She raised up off her chair and followed him through the maze of bodies that coursed their way. She could feel the over bearing heat of the lights that flashed and spun in oscillating colors, alluring the senses. Her heart raced and her breath labored. She could feel every intensity as her muscles began to tighten. She was mystified, afraid. Scared, not of him, but of herself. As the excitement of the club swooped in around her, she began to falter. Exploding in a dizzy froth of smoke and light. She felt as if she were going to pass out, but the warmth of his hand, that held her, kept her moving in through the mix of music drifted souls, caught in fleshy shells, jolting and jerking as they swung their arms and contorted their bodies in a vast rhythmic trance. James reached the center of the crowd, stopped. Rachael was still in motion when he pulled her into himself. She bumped into his chest then stared at him nose to nose. Her apology went unheard under the roar of music that filled the room. He smiled at her and began to move with the low reverberating bass tones that pounded out their crashing booms. She stood staring at him for a second longer, but he prompted her into moving that figure she wore so well. Her long dark hair spilling over her shoulders. And for a moment she closed her eyes, letting the frustrated fear wash through her. Gradually her breathing eased and her mind slid into a place where the colors and shapes she saw could draw her into their shifting endless fascination of beauty. A place where she could lose herself and just be. Smiling at how beautiful the colors and sounds mixed, how intricate the shapes flowed into a new pattern, then another each elegant and just as enticingly and utterly fascinating. She let herself slip into that realm few find true to heart. That realm of love. His every touch jabbed at her mind, sending dangerous thoughts racing in pivoting streams of heat that tumbled through her like fleeting winds. She let her body begin to flow with his, matching his every move.

Across the room, mouths dropped at the sight of them. Taylor and Thela, Dan and Sara stopped in their tracks, staring at James and Rachael. Watching the couple as the lights and sounds of electronic rhythms wound their way around the two, embracing them in it's twisting sounds and color. The air was eerie with envy and total indifference as the two continued to oscillate in a ribbon of flowing motions. As if they had danced together all their lives. Each seemingly knowing what the other would do in any given moment. Soon finding themselves the center of the floor as others around them slowly crept to the sides and let them move like a breeze that stirred in a small tyrant circle. When the duration of the song had played out and the sounds that were fed through the speakers had faded, they were left standing under flashing flickers of light that shone as bright as the eyes that stared at them from around the room. Clapping applause rose with whoops and whistles. James and Rachael stared at each other then turned and took their bows as they made their way off the floor and back to their table.

James walked her to the table and helped her to sit. Then offered her a drink. She smiled and with the sudden burst of embarrassment, she threw her face into her hands and tried to become as little as she could. But the clapping and the yelling wouldn't let her. Regardless she continued to try. James of course, always the show boat, took it all in stride as he raced off to the bar to get their drinks. Waving to the crowd. By then Taylor and Dan made it to him.

Bro! Was all that Taylor could get out. Obviously impressed. Don was a little more casual, James, what did you do, take dancing lessons?

No! James smiled, then turned to see Thela and Sara gloating around Rachael. Their faces beaming in smiles and laughter. Glancing over a the boys, now and then. Rachael' eyes met James' and held his stare for a long moment. Again he sweetly smiled and turned his attention back to the bar maid who stood demanding money for the drinks. Another fizzle of electronic hues filled the room, it's song all but audible as the waves of dreamy montage mixed and drifted in through the pools of spilled glistening lights. Stirring something deep and unfamiliar, a nameless feeling, all shaky and fierce...the shaky part seemed to be winning inside James as he carried the two drinks back to the table, curtailed by Don and Taylor, clearly refusing to miss any second of conversation that was about to conspire at that small four person table. James circled the table and sat across from Rachael, their eyes never leaving the others, caught in a visceral congruent that would not allow either to look away. The air felt heavy with a portion of mantle. Thela trying to break the surreal spell, but to no avail. It was like loose magic with a randomizing twist of technology. A realm that had done one hell of a bump and grind. Knocking the streams of magic loose from nodes that held ground, in the clubs vast atmosphere they were in. A chemical awe that hung in the air. Refusing to let go, in fear that the beauty of...would wash to colors of doom. James reached across the table and placed the drink in front of Rachael as awes came from the other girls, and a bit of laughter broke out from the boys.

Well now that we all have our understanding. I guess we won't have to worry about pairing up on this trip. Taylor smiled, then stood with his glass raised. To enzymes and envy, which are side by side in the dictionary, Glancing over at James then at Rachael, and Arctic and ice. Lets hope this trip proves to be as fruitful as tonight has become. Cheers went up from the small crowd. Get some rest...if you can...and I'll...I mean, we'll see you all in the morning. He finished. Downing his drink and lifting Thela up from her seat to drag her off with him. She could only turn and wave goodbye as she let herself be hauled away. The rest stayed an hour longer and they too, all found their ways homeward. James was not going to push Rachael, so he waited until they had a moment alone.

Thank you! She said. I had a great time.

Me too, and I'd really love to hang out with you more, as we go. If that's okay?

Sure! I'd like that. He smiled at her dancing eyes and she licked her lips as he moved in to kiss them. He hugged her tight and reluctantly let her go. Watching
