The Cake Mix Doctor is in! And the prescription is simple: By doctoring up packaged cake mix with just the right extras--a touch of sweet butter here, cocoa powder there, or poppy seeds, vanilla yogurt, sherry, eggs, and grated lemon zest for the Charleston Poppy Seed Cake--even the least experienced baker can turn out luscious signature desserts, time after time. The proof is in the taste, and the taste never stops--from Toasted Coconut Sour Cream Cake to Devilishly Good Chocolate Cake; from a to-die-for Caramel Cake and a Holiday Yule Log to cheesecakes, coffee cakes, sheet cakes, pound cakes, bars, brownies, and those all-important frostings, here are 175 fast, foolproof recipes that will transform the art of home baking in America.

Who could believe these cakes came out of a box? Moist, tender, rich, deep, and complexly flavored, without a hint of artificiality, each cake stand up and delivers. But without any of the fuss of baking from scratch. Anne Byrn, an award-wining food writer and self-described purist, creates recipes that employ a cake mix's strengths---convenience, ease-of-use, dependability, and almost imperviousness to overbeating, underbeating, overbaking, and underbaking.

In addition to the recipes are the Cake Mix Doctor's Q&A's, extensive "Doctor Says" tips, lists--15 Beautiful Birthday Cakes, 15 Cakes That Will Cash in at a Bake Sale--and more, all illustrated in a full-color photographic insert.

This handy cookbook contains more than 150 updated recipes for classic cakes. Anne Byrnes recipes start with store bought cake mixes that she tweaks with fresh ingredients, pudding, extracts, spices, etc. to make them extra special. The book is a paperback but the cover is laminated so it sturdy and durable for repeated kitchen use (works best in a bookstand because of the binding). I found the tips on high altitude cooking helpful and the frosting recipes are fabulous. If you participate in potlucks, family barbecues, bake sales, etc., this book is a lifesaver.more
I have made several delicious things using this cookbook. The recipes are easy and the results are usually very good. I particularly like the Darn Good Chocolate Cake!more
This is one of the most useful cookbooks in my collection. I love to scratch bake, but for times when I have neither the time nor the inclination, this book always comes through. And to be honest, for some cakes, such as rum cakes, a mix yields a better consistency than scratch. A great cookbook.more
WONDERFUL! I love all the pictures at the front of the book. Every recipe I have tried comes out perfect. VERY essential if you have a child, and no time to make "real" cake.more
The cakes are easy and quite fail-proof. Besides improving the cake mixes, Byrn provides easy and delicious frosting recipes, which are "from scratch." My biggest criticism of this book, and her others is in the binding. Cookbooks need to lie flat, and these don't, unless you break the binding! I wish it were spiral bound.more
These cakes are mostly rich in oil or butter, eggs, and other forbidden items in today's diet. They are also tasty and mostly easy to make. I spent a year making a new recipe each week to take to work and never had a failure. Not only that, but I now am pretty confident that I can do my own variations on a theme. It's probably not for the purist, but it is a boon to the busy baker.more
A great resource for ideas of homemade cakes from mixes. Love that you can take her recipes and adapted them for your needs.more
