    THE FIRST FIERCE storm of winter always had a peculiar effect on the tiny town of Whitville, in the northern woodlands of Acton.

    It was a town well populated by people of the Plain persuasion. Ordinarily, the Plainfolk were a somber and pious people. They kept to their work and worship. Their only celebration was prayer. They hardly acknowledged even the holiest days.

    But winter was different. That first sharp crack of cold was like a bugle call for everyone in the district; pious and raucous alike. Out they went, defiant and rebellious as ever they’d been during the war; stamping and blowing and complaining. The pious pretended it was mere duty. They were only out to see to the welfare of their neighbors.
