About this ebook

Captured from Jerusalem as a teenager and taken to a foreign country teeming with wealth and hedonism, whose king thinks he is a god, Daniel has a choice. Will he cling to the values he has been taught? Why not acquiesce to his captors, go with the flow in morality, and toss his strict Hebrew belief in an omniscient God? This choice haunts Daniel for the 70 years he serves four different Babylonian and Persian monarchs. When he finally learns that the time of captivity is over, will he still want to go home to Jerusalem?
These stories from the book of Daniel show what it means to take a stand against compromise, intimidation, and raw fear. They are told chronologically as Daniel serves under Kings Nebuchadnezzar, Belshazzar, Darius, and Cyrus, the King of Persia. Daniel's life gives us a picture of how to live in a world hostile to one's beliefs.
God's ministry to Daniel is witnessed in Daniel's unique ability to interpret dreams, read the mysterious handwriting on the wall, and record frightening visions regarding the future.
In the Court of the King uniquely fills the gap between children's Bible stories and adult Bible study.

I like to write, read, teach, sing, play the piano, swim, cook, play in the yard, and walk by the ocean. I prefer coloring books to plain paper, summer to winter, daytime to nightime, and morning to afternoon. I like large families, but I prefer to visit with one friend at a time. I love to study the Bible and discuss what God is doing in the world today, but I can't handle really scary adventure novels. I am more interested in people and animals than in rocks and plants.I tutor reading and writing and prefer second graders. I live with my husband Bill and cat Sasha in the center of California.

    PRELUDE TO CAPTIVITY

Imagine during the next war you are taken captive to a foreign country. You are just a teenager, compelled to conform to a pagan culture, eat their strange food, even have your named changed to reflect that you are now one of them. What will happen to your trust in God, your belief in Him? Will you continue to depend on your God?

Suppose you hear one of your trusted leaders advise everyone to settle down, build a home, raise a family and try to get along with your captors. Some of your friends whisper, Treason!

What if you find out that you have ten more years to live here in this foreign land before you’ll be released? How about twenty years? Or forty? How will you choose to live your life? You are far from home. Will you relinquish your family traditions now that you are separated from your family?

Daniel experienced all of this. He had enjoyed a privileged life of royalty in Jerusalem. He also maintained a life of faith in the sovereignty of Almighty God. He prayed to Him often. During captivity, Daniel’s faith was tested when his life was threatened by both man and beast. He also suffered frightening visions of the future, parts of which he would live through.

When he arrived in Babylon, Daniel discovered that his enemy was wealthy, worldly, sensual, enticing, and friendly. It would be easy to give in and be assimilated into the Babylonian culture. Many of the captives sooner or later did just that. But God gave Daniel three close friends his own age who shared the same values and beliefs Daniel held. Their faith, like Daniel’s, would also be tested and their lives put in jeopardy.

In Babylon, Daniel spoke of God to kings who held the power of life and death over him. Two of the three he served chose to acknowledge God as the one true God over all gods.

Come! Adventure with Daniel and his friends Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah in the uncertain, stress-filled times of this strange land. Learn about their God, the One they trusted with their greatest needs and most terrible fears.
