1. The Science of Vastu : Introduction

Nowadays there is a lot of talk about Vastu Shastra in all the towns and villages. Being a science related to construction of dwelling houses, temples, factories, commercial places etc. it is called Vastu Shastra. This science is based on the 5 elements called Earth, Water, Fire, Air and Sky (Prithvi, Aapah, Tejah, Vayuh, Aakasa) otherwise known as Pancha Maha Bhutah, without which no living being on earth can survive. If we can see and feel the presence of these elements and if you can see and feel the east solar rays and north magnetic rays, this can be called a science. If anybody can say that there is no Earth, no Water, no Air, no Fire, no Sun, no Sky and no North Pole, we can call this an occult science like astrology, numerology, palmistry and face reading etc. Since we can’t live without Earth, Air, Water, Fire, Sun, North Pole etc., we have got to believe that this is also a perfect science, which can be proved beyond doubt.

The main functions of the 5 elements start with the base line of North Pole. The entire world is rotating on the axis of the North and South Poles. When the North Pole is fixed, the Sun rises from the east and sets in the west. That is, 4 directions have been found out with the help of magnetic compass used by any pilot to fly the aeroplane or by a voyager in a ship or by a person walking through a sandy desert. Based on the five elements, modern studies have added four sub-directions or corners i.e. N-E (north-east), N-W (north-west), S-E (south-east) and S-W (south-west).

Vastu -Shastra is a Vast and ancient science of living. The word Vastu is derived from the root ‘Vas’ which means ‘to reside’. It is not an equivalent of the word architecture. Vastu is architecture and much more. While architecture is the

science, art or profession of designing and constructing buildings etc., the definition of Vastu extend into the realm of occultism. Vastu Shastra, the edifice science of Bhawan Sthapatya Kala, being the applied aspects of atharvaveda, is an ancient science and one of the eminent features of Indian heritage.

Building a house in ancient India was not only a house-craft but also a sacred ceremony and the house was considered a living organism. The spirit of the house was called the Vastu Purusha and different cardinal directions and sectors were assigned to different Gods like Brahma, Ishwara, Agni, Varun, Wind, Yam and Demon, since the waves flowing in a particular direction have a specific influence. Eshan or north east is presided over by God and is therefore suitable for a prayer room. The south-east belongs to Agni. The central space is Brahma’s and should be left open to the heavens. The head and limbs of the Vastu Purusha are to be left alone too.

The Shastra is being gradually applied not only in Houses
