About this ebook

A Very Scary Merry Christmas - Book 1

Boo Bangles is as scary as they come, and anyone who has ever been inside the old abandoned house across from Far Hollow's only park would agree. Horribly mean, foul, and ugly to a barely-there fault, he's a ghost and that's his job, especially each Halloween when the bravest come calling for a night of scary treats.

But this year he slept through Halloween.

    Chapter 1

A winter’s cold wind pushed through Far Hollow ahead of a fierce snowstorm and howled all through the night like a wounded animal. Come morning, deep drifts of snow piled atop anything that faced the sky. By then, the blizzard was long gone and all was quiet except for the lingering haunt of a bothersome snore.

In an earthen cellar beneath an old abandoned house across the street from Far Hollow’s only park, a space of chilled air realized the quiet outside and stirred from sleepy dreams of dastardly fun. Barely there and not much more, it floated aimlessly amongst a collection of old canning jars set atop dusty wooden shelves until it realized how it was awake. Then, with a few irritated grumbles and moans to get started, the space of unusual air slowly made for the rooms above. Inhaling the first moments of a new day, it slowly squeezed through a narrow gap beneath the slanted door to the other side and stopped.

It was in the kitchen, and the room was starkly quiet and cold.

A sparkle of gray light stabbed through a ragged shard of broken window against the far wall and flashed across the dimly lit space in a thin sheet of blinding glare. For the briefest moment, the mere suggestion of a shape passed through the sliver of light and was quickly gone.

Beneath the dirty window, wind had found a way to bring a mound of snow into the room during the night. Beyond the broken glass, bright sunlight sparkled across a deep layer of bright winter.

What is going on? a voice yawned from out of nowhere.

    Chapter 2

His name was Boo Bangles and he was a ghastly sight to barely behold. A ghost, a phantom—or his favorite, the boogeyman—he was a horrible apparition of the worst kind; scary as they come, and finally awake, after a long, goodly nap.

Mostly, he was invisible, but that was easily changed because that’s what ghost can do quite well. He could move things, too, which was hard; toss, if he had to, or hid things all together; and he could look deadly seriousness, or lay about like death warmed over, whichever was appropriate, because he was ugly, icky, iffy and otherworldly gross. It was a gift that he was rather proud of, actually, honed to a razor-sharp edge and included eerie howls, spine-chilling shrieks and a special clattery noise he made up that sounded every bit like loose bones—exactly what a proper haunting ghost ought to do with an eternity at hand.

Boo Bangles was the lingering impression of the last person to live in the old house. Of all places to die, the damp cellar was where he took his last living breath—right next to a store of canned tomatoes and a dead mouse that had the misfortune of snooping around
