Patrick D. Miller is Charles T. Haley Professor Emeritus of Old Testament Theology at Princeton Theological Seminary in Princeton, New Jersey. He is the author of numerous books, including The Religion of Ancient Israel. He is coeditor of the Interpretation commentary series and the Westminster Bible Companion series. In 1998, he served as President of the Society of Biblical Literature. He was also editor of Theology Today for twenty years.

    In tough times, it seems natural to worry. We care about what happens to ourselves, our loved ones, and the world at large, so when things seem to be working against us and the future looks bleak, we worry.

    However, worry is not really the most effective and caring state of mind in which to deal with our problems. Worry is chronic fearfulness. When fear becomes habitual, it wears down our energy and distorts our perceptions so that we don’t really know what’s most important. Soon, worry takes on a life of its own, regardless of the circumstances we face. We start to regard every problem, large or small, with the same kind of pessimism and dread, and soon our problems are multiplying because of worry.

    There are three ways out of worry:

    Solving all your problems (good luck!)

    Therapy and/or anti-anxiety drugs (may be useful but usually expensive, and drugs can cause problems of their own)

    Summoning your spiritual resources (free, effective, and non-toxic, but requires personal discipline)
