About this ebook

In the high elf city of Leogard, an elven noblewoman longs to leave her gilded cage. A half-breed former pirate wants nothing more than to escape his guilty past. Easier said than done...

Caliphany Aranea, nearly a century old, leads an enviable life as high elf King Leopold's niece and daughter of Sirius, Leogard's most famous wizard. She is expected to follow in her father's footsteps to lead the Mage Academy and to marry a man she doesn't even like. Yet, she craves a taste of life outside the city walls.

As a young boy, half-elf Galadin Trudeaux witnessed his parents' death at the hands of pirates. After being raised by those same murderers and forced to do their bidding, he escaped and now lives an honest life as a sea merchant and ranger.

When two brutes at Leogard Harbor attempt to kidnap Caliphany while she dreams of faraway lands, Galadin comes to her rescue. Impressed by his skills, she asks him to train her as a ranger. Though he is hesitant at first to train a woman of her class, Caliphany's hefty sack of gold finally persuades him. Unfortunately, her father is not amused, and the two must escape before Caliphany faces a forced marriage and Galadin faces a noose.

From that moment on, to the finale, where Caliphany must decide where her heart truly lies, she and Galadin embark on a fateful journey that will change their lives forever. Can they survive the trials and tragedies ahead to find a love that stands the test of time?

In a uniquely compact and bluntly honest writing style, Parker has managed to craft a world, build characters and create palpable emotions in the reader with the plotting. Combining all the elements needed in a good story: a quest, a romance, characters who are unique yet sublimely defined and a series of events that are easy to relate to, this story starts slowly as readers are given the chance to familiarize themselves with the world and the characters. Soon the pacing changes and the scuffles between the two romantic leads as they struggle with their own issues and maneuvering their way through the challenges begin to appear and expose the very human-like challenges their world faces from intolerance, war, greed and violence. A really good start to what is sure to be a series appreciated by many.

I received an eBook copy from the author for purpose of honest review for the Book Trailer Showcase eMagazine. I was not compensated for this review, and all conclusions are my own responsibility.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Ever played Dungeons and Dragons? This book is straight out of it. High Elves, wood elves, halflings, dwarves, humans, half-elves, its all there. If you don’t like this stuff, don’t read it. It truly read like something out of a D&D campaign, with some romance and heartbreak rolled into it. The author put in enough culture into the world to make it believable, and enough description to make you feel it. As an old Dungeons and dragons gamer and a fan of fantasy, I really enjoyed reading this book. The sequel to it is on my TBR shelf, after I get read the books I owe other reviews to.

Where to begin? A Ranger’s Tale is set in a fantasy realm called Tallenmere and is a part of a series based in the world created by Mysti Parker. (The lovely lady in the in picture). I am a huge fan of fantasy novels and never ending sagas, I even write one. So when this one came up for review as part of her blog tour I thought, Why not?
The novel is written in a way I’ve not encountered before. There are three main characters all of whom are in first person. Sometimes my poor old brain failed to cope with the change of view point and I had to keep checking back to see who was talking. But that’s just me. There are two separate things to this tale one I really liked the other, not so much.
First, the not so much. Romance! Whilst the romantic triangle is handled well it’s just not my cup of tea, as we say in Blighty. A Ranger’s tale is well told, simple and very enjoyable. Just a bit too kissy-kissy for my tastes. That said, it is good. Quickly moving on.
So now the good stuff. Mysti Parker does write very good fantasy. Not deeply descriptive, epic, or told with a flamboyant sweeping of arms, just a good straight forward story telling. The magic is good, the fighting works well, and land is believable. I could quite easily sit and read a number of these books if the good lady could do a boys edition.
The narrative, being clear and concise, carries the tale along at good pace. A really good pace. You could sit down with a couple of coffees (wine for the ladies) and read through the book in a single sitting and your day would not be wasted. I really liked it, except for all the sex. I don’t like sex in Game of Thrones either, it’s even worse there as it never furthers the story. Here,it’s part of it, so I’ll just have put up with it if I want to read the others, won’t I?

So, how will I mark it… One part of me says 3 stars but in truth this is a great first novel. Many people never right stories that entertain like this one. So… it’s a four star. Well done Mysti.

I gave this book a four, but it is a very very high four. There were just a few things that stopped me from giving it a full five stars, but I'll get to that later. First, I want to say that this was an awesome book. Fantasy/paranormal romances are one of my favorite genres to read, so I loved Caliphany and her abilities. My favorite part of the book was her romance with Galadin. They have an undeniable attraction from the start, but he's a ranger and she must study at home under her father. The world they lived in was so interesting and at times scary. For the entire book, I couldn't wait to see what happened next. The problems I had with A Ranger's Tale was that the middle of the book was a bit slow. The beginning and end were great, but time just sort of dragged by for Caliphany in the middle and so did the story. One other thing is that I felt like Caliphany and Galadin's relationship progressed a bit too fast. I think more time was needed for them to grow in their relationship (like how they act with each other) before diving in head first. Overall A Ranger's Tale was an excellent romance book and I was really sad when it had to end.
