Introduction

The aim of this short book is to help you find the best route to creating your dream garden, in a way that's cost effective and suits your lifestyle needs and budget. I've purposefully kept it short, as let's face it, who has spare time these days? Despite the short length, the information contained in this WILL save you a lot of time, money and aggravation. Most importantly of all, it will set you on the right path to creating your dream garden.

For our American readers, when I say garden, I mean yard or landscape. For us Brits, garden means the whole thing, not just the plant borders!

PLEASE NOTE: This is an overview of what is involved with successfully landscaping a garden. It is NOT a step-by-step guide on how to do it (see Rachel's other books for that). Knowing exactly what is involved to successfully landscape a garden will help you choose the best options for your time and budget, this book will set you on the right path to success.

This book will give you an overview of what is involved with creating a great-looking landscape. It will help you to decide if you should DIY (which I totally encourage you to do) or, if that's not for you, how to work effectively with landscape professionals.

My hope is to make this a permanently free book, if online publishers allow. Or failing that, as low priced as possible. I'm doing this because it's important this information helps as many people as possible. So, do please help spread the word, and pass it along to as many people as you can.

Now, I will unashamedly mention some of my own products and services in this book, as frankly, it would be very remiss of me not to! That being said, the main aim of the book is to help you find the right path to getting the garden you want, and I will suggest lots of different options to make sure you do just that.

This book is an expanded version of the Garden Help PDF Guide that I give away on my website. The formatting limitations of digital formats leave most designers wanting to cry, especially where images and layout are concerned. So if you'd like a prettier version, with a lot more pictures, do head over to this page to grab your copy: http://www.successfulgardendesign.com/help-guide/ Please note: It doesn't have the last section on landscape contractors.

If DIY garden planning isn't your thing, what pitfalls must you look out for, when hiring landscape professionals?

I'll give you all my top tips on choosing the right landscape professionals, from designers to landscapers. I've run several landscaping companies, including my own, so I've had to hire and fire my fair share of designers and landscapers. I will share with you how I've learned to spot the really good landscape pros from the really awful ones!

Don't let it happen to you!

I've been a professional, international, garden designer for over twenty years now, and in that time I have seen hundreds and hundreds of gardens that have gone wrong, despite the owner's best efforts. I've witnessed the results of people spending thousands to create their dream garden, only to have it turn out not looking great, or sometimes, awful.

It's my mission to make sure you don't waste your money buying the wrong things for your garden and to help your achieve your dream, for as little cost as possible. And, it is possible. The key to creating a stunning garden doesn't really come down to how much money you throw at it (although obviously, it certainly doesn't hurt if you do have a good size budget).

Whilst there are certain costly aspects to landscaping a garden, like laying patios and installing walls, you can still get some amazing results by doing simple things that don't cost much. You would be shocked at just how much difference re-shaping your existing lawn can make to your garden. Obviously, in order for it to work, you have to choose the right lawn shape, one that ties in the rest of the elements in the garden, and makes the most of the available space.

So, in this book, I want to give you an overview of what's involved in creating a fantastic garden, so that you'll be able to spend your money, not only wisely, but effectively too, and get the results you really want.

Where do you start with landscaping a garden?

Most people start at the end and wonder why their garden isn't looking as good as they'd like. It would make more sense to start at the beginning, wouldn't it? So let's look at where things usually start to go wrong...
