    After D came back from the hospital, he seemed to be doing his best to ignore me/avoid me once again. That day I knew he was due to be released, so I sent him a text to find out if he was still on track to come home. No answer. Then when I and another flatmate were talking together in the kitchen, the door opened, and in he entered, slowly, limping with the aid of a crutch, with a thick growth of facial hair masking his usually clean-shaven features. He looked so different that I only knew it was him because I knew it had to be him and no-one else; I would not have recognised him in the street. Strapped across his chest he was carrying a bag that looked quite heavy, at least for him in that state, and he was carrying another heavy-looking bag hooked over his shoulder. My heart quickly filled with compassion at seeing him in this state, and I instinctively moved to help him. However he refused my help. That was to set the tone for our life together over the next couple of weeks.
