DJ Marcussen

DJ Marcussen lives in the Midwest with her husband, dog, and a zillion plants. (Well, okay, maybe not a zillion, but it sure seems like it when it's time to weed.) She has written articles and short stories for several publications and worked in many different fields, including (in no particular order): music teacher, insurance claims, auditing, actuarial, pet care services, baker, gardener, tax preparer and writer. It might be added that of all her experiences thus far, she was a pretty good tax preparer, but a lousy baker. Nowadays, she spends her time tending to her garden, writing stories, and blogging. The Tax Angel is DJ's first e-Book (short story).

    The Tax Angel

My new wife is sitting in the passenger seat of our Ford Fusion, her hands casually resting on the purse on her lap. I think she is an angel. She certainly looks like one to me, with her luminous skin and shining blonde hair.

She notices me looking at her and gives me a gentle smile before raising one arm and pointing toward the front window. Better watch the road and not me, she admonishes. She is not really worried though. I can tell she is flattered.

It's early Sunday morning and we are on the way to church. Traffic is light, we are only going 25mph on a one way street and most of the people in the neighborhood are sleeping in, or watching Sunday morning cartoons with their kids. So I'm not worried about my driving either, but I obligingly turn my head and pretend to focus on the deserted road. I keep peeking at her. She is so beautiful.

There is more traffic as we approach the church and I have to concentrate more on what I am doing. I find a
