Everything you need - and more!, 19 April 2016This review is from: Finland Marco Polo Guide (Marco Polo Guides) (Marco Polo Travel Guides) (Paperback)(free book in exchange for review)I'm soon off to Scandinavia, so was delighted to be sent this travel guide. At only 136 pages, and a very reasonable price, I wasn't sure how much useful info it would provide.I was immediately struck with the best 'Insider Tips' on the first pages, giving the reader some unmissable Finnish experiences: visit a stone age village, sleep in a snow castle, try ice swimming... And there's details on spas, indoor activities and free attractions. A few pages entitled 'In a Nutshell' tell you all the basics about the country - lakes, moomins, summercottages, saunas.. - and then there's sections on food, shopping and possible routes. All before the guide takes you, region by region, from Helsinki up to Lapland, with lots of colour photos, details on where to stay (inc low budget options) and sightseeing highlights. Finally there's info on sports, travel with kids, events, travel tips and basic phrases. The highlight for me, and what sets it apart from other guides, is a pull-out map in the back pocket(1" = 34.7 miles). Even though our foreign holidays usually involve coach travel, I've lost count of the times I've wanted to see how much further it would be to destination! There are bigger, more detailed (but heavier!) works out there, but if you want a cheapish, basic book, I don't think you can go wrong with this!
