About this ebook
Jacob’s Story
Featuring a donkey ride owner called Billy and a lame donkey called Jacob, this story aims to show that any disabilities or handicaps can be overcome, (even if they are physical ones).
Jacob proves to be something of a burden to to start off with. In the longer term however, he comes to be a far bigger asset than Billy could ever have imagined, owing to a unique set of circumstances.
As the story unfolds Jacob becomes something of a hero and the resultant publicity is enough to change both their lives forever in a very positive way. There is one final drama for them to both overcome before they can wholly benefit from their circumstances however
Besides being a story of hope, this story also seeks to show readers/listeners how being pleasant and good natured, often pays great dividends in the long-term, whereas being unpleasant and intolerant, generally has the reverse effect and can be a real disadvantage in life. It has been designed to inspire and give comfort to young people faced with seemingly overwhelming difficulties in life, (including physical disabilities).

Jacob's Story - Mat Gardener
Introduction
Many years ago, on the east coast of England, there was a fabulous pleasure beach. During the summer months, a great many people were employed on that beach; amongst them was a man called Billy, who owned a group of donkeys. When the weather was good, he used to use them to take children for rides along the beach.
Besides being about Billy, this story is also about a disabled donkey called Jacob, and his amazing bravery when rescuing a young girl whilst they were at work one day. This story tells about that incident, and what happened to them both afterwards.
Life on the Beach
Being a regular trader on the seafront, Billy’s voice could often be heard on the beach during the summer months.
"Donkey rides, donkey rides, come and get your donkey ride here. A memory your children will never forget! Come and get your donkey ride," Billy would tell everyone very loudly, as he walked up and down the beach with his donkeys. Little did anyone know just how much of a hero he and a certain young donkey called Jacob would become one hot summer's day, during their working season on the beach. That was to be a time in the future though. For now, Billy was just another beach worker trying to earn his living as best as he could; lighting up the lives of the many children who enjoyed riding on his donkeys during long hot summer days.
Fortunately for Billy, no two days were the same, as he met a very wide range of people during his working days, all with different circumstances, backgrounds and personalities. There was generally a pattern to Billy’s day however. Having spotted Billy and his donkeys on the beach, a young boy or girl would often become very excited and they would ask their parents, or those looking after them if they could have a ride on one of Billy’s donkeys. Luckily for the child, the adults looking after them would usually be sitting nearby in some deckchairs relaxing at the time.
‘Well how much will it cost?’ one of the adults would ask the child cautiously.
I don’t know,
the young boy or girl would reply truthfully. Very often the young boy or girl would then go up and asked another of the adults looking after them the same question in a pleading voice.
"Can I have a ride on one of the donkeys? Please let me have a ride on one of the donkeys. Can I?" they would ask, hoping for a definite yes to their question.
‘That depends upon how much money it will cost?" the other adult would then reply quickly, before adding, ‘well go and ask the man how much will it cost to ride on his donkeys, and I’ll think about it.’
The excited child would then go up to Billy a short time later and asked him directly, "How much does it cost to ride on your donkeys Mister?" With a big smile on his face, Billy would then give the young boy or girl a special price; much lower than he’d usually charge.
Having found out the price to ride on Billy’s donkeys, the young boy or girl would then go back to those looking after them and tell them the price. Much to the child's great delight, their wish was often granted! A short time later, sitting high up in the saddle and grinning happily, the young boy or girl would then head off down the beach with Billy walking alongside them. As the young boy or girl went past; those that were looking after them, looked on fondly, being pleased that the young boy or girl in their charge was having so much fun. Nearby there were many other holiday-makers; all enjoying themselves as they sat in their deckchairs enjoying the warm summer sun.
‘Isn’t this just wonderful, sitting here with no work to do. I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else,’ many of the contented holidaymakers would tell their partners sitting next to them, as they sat sunning themselves on the beach.
This was to be the start of another busy day for Billy and his donkeys; one of many he was to have during the long hot season on the beach, a season which he hoped would continue right through to the late autumn.
This particular beach was known throughout the land because of the wonderful holidays people used to enjoy whenever they went there. Besides having lots of arcades and a big funfair, packed full of the most amazing rides, this particular holiday resort also had a long stretch of golden sand, which went as far as the eye could see. Indeed the town took great pride in its beach and offered a wide variety of different types of services to the many visitors who went there. As well as having a large selection of deckchairs available on the beach, there were also plenty of cafés and ice cream kiosks
