“I was responding to a call about a pervert at an all female gym. I had apprehended him and was in route to booking but... I don’t know. It’s like he had some kind of mind control device or something. I swear. One minute I was driving him to the station and the next he had me pulled over and releasing him from his hand cuffs and... and...”
“And engaging in sexual activities with an apprehended suspect. A criminal in police custody. And then you let him get away.”
“But what? You had no control over yourself? Do you really expect me to believe that this guy magically forced you to do all of this?”
“No... it was some type of device. I saw it with my own eyes, right before...”
“Yeah. You already said. A mind control device. Forgive me if I remain skeptical of your fantastical story, detective.”
“But it’s true.”
The chief just narrowed his eyes at me and shook his head, as if the entire premise of the thing wasn’t even worth any more words.
“Look, chief. I know how it sounds. It sounds crazy. I know it does.”
“You’re right. It sounds crazy. I thought you were smarter than this, Lindsay. I have to say, I am sorely disappointed right now.”
“I don’t want to hear any more of your ridiculous story. I’ve heard enough.”
“I... yes, chief. I apologize. It won’t happen again.”
“You’re right. It won’t. Give me your gun and your badge.”
“You heard me. I’m placing you on temporary suspension until we can figure out what the hell to do about this mess.”
My heart sank. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. I placed the gun and the badge on the desk in front of me without saying another word. The chief just crossed his arms and shook his head as he watched me.
“I’m sorry, Lindsay. You brought this on yourself though. I could have you in handcuffs right now. I don’t want to have to do that, though. You’re dismissed until further notice.”
I nodded and left his office.
