CHAPTER 21
FULL MOONS?
Then how do you kill a creature that can’t be killed?
asks Anica.
Like I said, they can be killed, but you have to get to the Shadow inside the body to kill it. If you stop the body from functioning, they are forced to abandon the body and that’s when you can kill them with a Lumanara spell.
Hey, I know that one, that’s the Sunlight spell, right?
asks Rain.
Very good, Rain.
You can cast a Sunlight spell?
Anica asks in awe.
That’s cool! Do you need a wand, or can you cast it by hand?
asks Rain.
They sell Lumanara wands at any local Wand-Smith shop if you haven’t mastered or know the spell for casting it. Anyone who does know it can conjure it using their hands or fingertips.
Can these Screaming Shadows be killed with sunlight while inside a body?
asks Anica.
No, only when they leave the body; that’s when they are weakest and exposed. Natural sunlight or a Lumanara sunlight spell will cause them to instantly vaporize.
So the trick is to get them to get out of the body they’re in and get someone else to cast a sunlight spell at the Shadow in its raw form?
Right.
answers Marcel.
We best get some rest, in case they do come tonight. We’ll need to be ready
says Marcel as he hangs his hat on a metal spike sticking out of the stone wall. He then lays his head down.
Rain gets comfortable as Anica sits, deep in thought.
I don’t know if I can sleep or even rest. My mind is racing and I’m worried about everything. I didn’t sign up for this. I’m supposed to be on this great vacation that so far, no offense to anyone here, has really SUCKED!
Marcel gently rests his hand on the side of her face. He does the same with Rain's face.
"Sleep well Anica. You too Rain. Go to sleep!"
Suddenly both of them grow very tired and start yawning.
You’re right, let’s go nite-nite,
Anica murmurs sleepily.
In a few minutes both girls are out to the world and even Noodles is squeaking some Zzzz’s from where he hangs upside down. Marcel had cast a sleeping spell to help them rest peacefully. There isn’t much room left to stretch out so Marcel waved his wand and the room stretches out sideways, enough for everyone to have room to sleep. Marcel smiles at his own ability as he closes his eyes and drifts off to sleep.
While they sleep peacefully in their room, the sun is setting over the horizon and the skies darken with the oncoming night. There aren’t many clouds above. The stars twinkle one by one at first and soon the sky is full with thousands of them. Most of the torches are lit and in place along all sides of the castle walls. The remaining ones are being lit by a guy riding a horse around the perimeter. Their orange glow flickers and dances in the slightest of breezes along the cold stonewall.
On the opposite end of the horizon not one, but two moons start to rise over the horizon. One moon is not as bright as the other but it’s slightly larger, causing the brighter one to orbit a full circle every five minutes or so. As they spin around each other, the dual moons take turns illuminating or eclipsing the ground below, casting either full moon light or complete darkness.
Guards in the watch towers high above the castle use the brighter side of the moon to survey the land and make sure nobody is advancing on the castle but it’s difficult to see when the darker moon takes over and blackens the surroundings. Since their night vision doesn’t adapt quickly enough, everyone is a little on edge as they watch for the enemy who could be anywhere.
Several hours into the dark night, one of the guard towers is ringing the warning bell frantically causing everyone to tense up and be on high alert. Rain, Anica, and Marcel awake from their sound sleep and quickly look outside the window to the watchtower that sounded the alarm.
The ringing stops but the sound still echoes in everyone’s ears as they stare off into the distance, trying hard to see the enemy everyone has been warned of. It’s so quiet; the only sound heard is the cool night wind blowing and the cloaks that the guards are wearing are flapping gently like flags. Everyone is listening intently as people’s hearts are beating quickly in their chests at the fear of the unknown enemy. The guards grip their swords and axes tightly with anxiety.
Marcel pulls the door open and notices no one is posted there. One of the guards comes down the stairs from the watchtower and Marcel asks, What did you see?
We thought we saw movement, several hundred yards away by the ridge. We’re not sure but we think maybe they are advancing every time the dual moons casts cause shadows over the land. Once the lighter moon shines its light, there’s nothing there.
The guard continues on his way, the sounds of metal armor clanking fades the further away he gets. Marcel looks over the castle walls out into the distance, but sees nothing.
All of the guards and archers along the tops of the castle walls are on high alert and ready to fire at a moments notice. They wait anxiously, trying to see anything as the moonlight cycles from darkness back to light, as the moons circle each other every five minutes or so.
After waiting about ten minutes or so, Anica gets impatient and decides to leave the chamber and walk along the well-defended castle wall in order to get a better look at who’s ready for battle.
She notices the humans, dwarves and elves, but she also notices that some creatures have two or more heads, some with four arms, or what looked like arms? Some of them have tentacles and even stranger parts sticking out of their bodies that she doesn't recognize.
Regardless of what they look like, each one of them is holding a sword, an axe, a bow and arrows, or a combination of them and each of them
