Chapter One

Hey, Kat. How’s it going? Everything okay? What’s wrong?

Kat smiled for the first time in two weeks, surprised she still remembered how.

She’d had a rough couple of days and knew she had several more ahead. And the hard part hadn’t even started yet.

It’s going. Everything’s fine. And there’s nothing wrong. I just wanted to call and thank you again for asking Garrett to come with me to the open house. I’m not sure what he told you, but it certainly was no picnic for him. Please thank him again for me.

On the other end of the line, her brother paused.

Shit. Why hadn’t she emailed? Obviously, Erik had heard something in her voice, even though she’d done her damnedest to hide her emotions.

Of course, she’d never been able to hide much from Erik, and she braced for his inevitable third degree.

Actually, Erik said, he didn’t say a lot, other than the drinks were top-shelf and he appreciated the hotel room for the weekend since it gave him time to visit his sister. But we already had this conversation three days ago so…I’m asking again. What’s wrong?

Her brother was far from stupid even though he could sometimes be the king of the clueless nerds. But he knew her, sometimes better than she wished he would.

It had only been a week since the open house, and since then, she felt as if she’d been racing down a long, dark hallway wearing sunglasses, never sure when something was going to pop out of the shadows and knock her off the path she’d started.

So far nothing had, but now that she’d decided on a plan, she wanted to put it in place before anyone had the chance to deter her.

And Erik was the last person she needed to talk with to set her plan in motion.

There really is nothing wrong. But… Do you have a few minutes?

Of course, just give me a sec.

Erik pulled the phone away from his mouth but she could hear him talking in the background.

Hey, babe. Tell K I’ll be done in a few minutes. A pause. No, go ahead. You guys start without me. Another pause. All right, Katnip. What’s up?

She shook her head but didn’t say anything about Erik’s pet name. She wasn’t even sure he realized he’d used it. His brain was probably still focused on his girlfriend Jules, whom he’d obviously been talking to.

I am interrupting, aren’t I?

Kat, it’s dinner. It’s not like it won’t be there when we’re finished. Now spill.

She glanced at the clock on the wall across from her desk. Hell, it was close to seven and she hadn’t noticed. And she still had a mountain of work on her desk.

Sighing, she tossed her pen at the tower of files and leaned back in her chair. I’m going to take you up on your offer. If it still stands.

Dead silence for a full five seconds. She knew exactly how long because she continued to watch her clock as the second hand ticked by.

Shit, seriously? Erik sounded amazed. Damn, Kat, you should know you don’t even have to ask. The job’s yours if you want it. Of course it is. But what the hell happened? Did Mom do some—

No, no. Nothing happened. At least nothing she wanted to talk about with her brother. I just think it’s time.

Erik snorted. Well, no shit and duh. You should’ve been outta that damn law office years ago. You’re too damn good for them. Now you’ll have your own practice and you can do whatever the hell you want.

Leave it to Erik to make her feel stupid and relieved in the same sentence. Good thing she loved him. Otherwise, she’d have to kill him.

I needed to do this on my own schedule. She paused. But… Thank you.

Erik huffed. Hey, you don’t have to thank me. You’re actually giving me exactly what I want. Someone I trust implicitly who knows how I think. It’s a no-brainer, Kat.

And you’re sure Keegan will—

Stop. Don’t even go there. You know he’s not going to be a problem so there’s nothing to discuss. As long as you want it, the job’s yours. But are you gonna tell me what happened to make you finally get off your ass and make the move? Or will I have to threaten Garrett with unemployment until he spills?

Erik would never threaten any of his employees over something so trivial. But he’d probably continue to nag her until she told him something plausible.

She just couldn’t tell him the truth.

"Something did happen, but it’s not something bad. Honestly. I…spoke to someone who gave me a different outlook on my life. Something I needed to hear. It made me see things in a new
