Wow. That was incredibly strong. There was a romance, and it even had the standard trope of ungovernable lust, but that was a minor part of a strong story about a parent's love for a child and the way a bad upbringing can warp a person. The opening scene, with her fresh out of prison, caught me up immediately, and watching Max's opinions change…and their interactions with the members of the family… Then there were Max's own ghosts to deal with. The final breaking was - a trifle conveniently timed, but reasonable. And the final scene with the arrival of the cavalry - wow. Overall it was a pretty amazing book. It's still only a romance, and I'm not even sure I'll be able to reread it - there are quite a few twists and it might not work as well when I know the answers. But - wow.
