Walter Gottlieb Groebli was a drifter who was originally from Atlanta, Georgia. His grandparents settled there after immigrating from Switzerland. The 18-year-old Walter was taken in by wealthy Percival Wilcox Whittlesey, who had a luxurious home in Nyack, NY.
