Chapter 6
Aunt Hannah hasn’t mentioned having mamm see a psychiatrist again, but we have only a few days, until the two weeks Aunt Hannah and I discussed, is finished. I decide that I’ve let Mamm sit around the house for too long. Her body and her mind are crumbling, and if she continues this way, killing herself by inches, I’ll never forgive myself. The girls are worried too. I’d sat them down, after the incident with the doll, and we had a nice talk about being sisters and not fighting amongst ourselves, for Mamm’s sake. They really responded to it. Esther has even begun acting like a little mamm to Martha, talking to her like a miniature parent, using her little index finger like a teacher’s ruler.
I still cling to the idea that the three of us could pull Mamm out of her misery. The Monday after church, with Hannah’s help, we manage to coax Mamm onto a chair in the backyard. But even as we giggle and romp in the muddy grass, Mamm just stares off, head sinking lower every day.
Play with us, Mamm!
Esther shouts, pulling Mamm’s hand to get her out of the chair. C’mon and play!
But Mamm pulls her arm away, leaving Esther to stumble backward and fall on her rear-end. I pick her up quickly and stay cheerful, so that Esther will take it for a game.
Another afternoon, while indoors doing the cleaning, the girls and I allow us to buzz closer and closer to Mamm, in a chair, but this time in the living room.
Well, variety is the spice of life, they say.
So I’m sweeping, and Esther is dusting, and Martha is just generally stomping around, pretending to sweep and dust alternately. Uh oh, watch out, Mamm,
I say, my tone exaggerated, big sweeping job coming through here. Move it or lose it!
The girls and I chuckle, but Mamm just looks back at me like I’m insane. So I sweep even more, really kicking the dust up as much as I can. "Well, it’s easy enough just to get up out of the way, if you really don’t like
